Wont bigger tires mess up your speedometer?
Ok so im getting ready to get some rims and tires on my civic, but when I get 17" rims I need to get bigger tires. So, wont a bigger tire mess up what the odometer/speedometer is reading? If so, is there any way the dealer can recalibrate it or something without charging me a lot of money?
It will mess up your speedometer, if u want to see how much it will mess up. Look at the top of the page where u can select different section, there should one that says "Tire Calc". Click on that and u'll know the rest.
Sometimes, I can see right through myself ...

Best thing to do is to get rims+tires that are pretty close to the stock diameter of your tires. The closer you stay, the less your speedo will be thrown off. The best choice for tires on your 17s would be 215/45 stock. It'll only throw your speedo off by about 0.5mph.

Well, I dont think I would have a problem with it being off .5 percent, but my dad would . Could anyone tell me about what a dealer or anyone would charge for recalibration?

if u travel 60 MPH with that size tire, your speedometer would read 59.6 MPH.
that is the closest size to the stock tire.
Essentially no need for a recalibration with 215/45/17. Nearly identical in diameter. It seems like most people assume that bigger rim equals the whole wheel/tire package in being "larger" than stock, when it really is just a bigger rim with less rubber.
It's all good

Doesn't your odometer get affected by that difference though? I'm getting 18's soon, and with a speedometer that reads 2% faster than I'm going, wouldn't I register more miles than I'm actually driving ?

I don't think you would even notice your speedometer being off that much. I may be wrong but cars don't seem to be perfectlly accurate from the factory anyways
