QUESTIONS ABOUT SWITCHING TO SYNTHETIC.

gefore you all flame me, i searched, and was unable to find the answer to my question. ok, i have been told by some sources that if i switch to synthetic oil from regular oil, that it would be necessary to replace all of the gaskets because of the diffrent effects of the two types of oil. they said that the synthetic tends to shrink the gaskets, and the regular oil makes them swell. meaning that the gaskets will get smaller and result in an oil leak if i do not replace them. is this true? also, which synthetic do you reccommend? i was wanting to go with Royal Purple.

I am not aware of any problems using major brands of synthetic, from reading other's posts and my own experience. This may become more of an issue when your car reaches higher mileage.

I use Mobil-1 5W30 with success. Others swear by Amsoil or other brands.

That getting new gaskets thing is a full load of BS. They're trying to take your money. The only suggestion I would have if you switch to synthetic is not to switch back to regular.

In your owners manual they go into some detail about Syntheic oil, Honda says its fine to use, but to use 5w-20. Mobil 1 e-mailed me a few weeks ago saying that 5w-20 should be avaliable by the end of this year.

That's great news. Even though people run 0w-30, I just don't know that much about oil to run anything else than what is reccomended in the manual. When Mobil releases the 5w-20 I'll try it out. That is if it's full synthetic?

I've explained this millions of times on this forum but here we go again. I will never, ever use 5w20. 5w30 is perfect. F#ck the manual. The only reason they suggest it is because it's what they used in their gas mileage tests and emissions. But, used over a long period of time when you rev your car over 3k RPMs that oil doesn't provide nearly enough protection against thermal wear because it is too thin. It hurts your engine to use such a thin oil over a long period of time.

that information is false. The only time you have to worry about gaskits are if you have 100,000+ miles on the car and then you switch to synthetic. Just cause it is thinner and you seals may be worn. If you do it now, you wont have any issue's down the road. It is actually better for the car. As for oil, I run mobile 1, 10w30 all year round. Done it with all my cars, and it works the best.

the only reason they say use 5w-20 is because it is really thin, and if something breaks on your car, they will repair it and not being udner warrenty. Its only so they can get more buisness. Ford is doing thesame thing now. I heard this straight from my tech guy at honda.
