Hey everyone, I am going to start changing my own oil and I read that the recommended oil for our civics is 5W20. I hear that 5W30 won't make much of a difference but I am more concerned with voiding my warranty by using something not recommended by Honda. First of all, if I change my oil will it void my warranty? Next, if it doesn't void my warranty, will using 5W30 void it? Thanks for your help!

In my opinion, changing you own oil will not void the warrenty but if something break and it was caused by the oil you used or that you did something wrong then I can see why the warrenty will be void... Correct me if I'm wrong.

No and No. I a already talked to two dealerships and as they said its fine, it doesnt even matter if u use a different oil filter. Your good to go homeboy.

No it won't void your warrenty, but i personally think you should use 5-20 cuz the new civic engines are designed to run on thinner motor oil. If you use 5-30 it may be too thick for the engine to run smoothly. In the long run the engine may not be as reliable.

I know some dealerships will void your Warranty unless you use the specified oil.......Just get Amsoil 5-20 from their Website..LINKOLA...... It recommended by Amsoil for 2001-on Honda's........I've gained about 2 miles a gallon,,& the car seems to idle smoother......Also,, the 5-20 grade keeps me in line with my Warranty....[IMG]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/IMG]

AMS Oil 5W20 is what I use too, every 5,000 miles. The stuff's great!

This is my take on this subject...

I use Mobil-1 5W30 for the past half a year almost. Runs smoother than conventional oil, and the oil flows through the engine (after a cold start) quicker. Synthetic will flow better than conventional, so it counteracts the slight increase in viscosity I think. However, because synthetic stands up better to heat, it will last longer and protect better than conventional.

Ford recently also switched to 5W20 factory fill on a lot of their cars. The thing is, a lot of these cars in 2000 were spec'ed for 5W30, no engine changes, nothing new, but in 2001 they starting spec'ing 5W20. There is an article about this on the Web. This indicates that 5W20 and 5W30 are fairly interchangeable, and it is only a matter of policy. According to the article, 5W20 is beginning to be spec'ed because it helps increase fuel efficiency ratings for the company.

Also, Amsoil is currently the only producer of 5W20 synthetic I believe. A detailed look reveals that Amsoil is on the thicker side of for 5W20, while Mobil-1 is on the thinner side of 5W30. Therefore the difference between Amsoil's 5W20 and Mobil-1's 5W30 is marginal. Both could be acceptable substitutes for conventional 5W20.

That's what I use. Have 31k miles on the car and it runs fine. Just make sure you use a factory filter. And washer. It's good insurance.

I know Redline makes an Oil because I've seen it in their advertisement in the back of our Car magazies like Sports Compact, Import Tuner, Turbo.....Check out the add......$90 for a case....Way Too Much.......I'm glad I went with Amsoil...I change every 5,000 like the manufacturer suggests...And I"m within warranty guildelines......[IMG]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/IMG]
