instrument gauge and the digital odometer...again
this topic has been discussed before, but the search didn't help and i'm getting conflicting answers.
i talked to a friend and he said that the odometer readings are kept in memory by the ecu, which is comfirmed when the people from majestic honda said that i do not need to get my mileage recalibrated if i buy a new instrument gauge.
but when i brought in my car to the dealer not to long ago, they wanted $400 to replace my guage, most of the cost they say is to ship it out to recalibrate the mileage. plus, most of the people here say that with a new guage the mileage is back to zero.
so what's the fact? thanks.

as for the 400 bucks thats probly including everything, parts, shipping, time to recalibrate, shippping back and time for dealer to put back in ur car, i dont think its stored in the ecu bc they have to send it out to get it put on there, the part itself actually cost something like 199, i asked the parts counter. if ur not doing it under warranty then tell them to recalibrate it and give it to u, ull put it in, and save urself some cheese. its only 5 screws and two wiring harnesses to plug in.
yes the milage is stored in memory, im 100% sure. all the cluster does is gives you a read out of the milage....so basically if you broke the digital display, say put a screw driver thru it so you couldnt read it anymore and you drove a couple days w/ out it, then you bought a new gauge cluster and put it in you milage would not be the same. there is no recalibration, you would have to physically cut wires to disable the milage from being counted.
If the honda's odometer is like any other digital one, then yes, the mileage is stored in the car's computer, BUT it is also stored in the actual cluster's unit as well. Most new cars feature this to prevent tampering or switching the cluster's for a low mileage one. I remember some dirt bag on this site wanted to do that cause he didnt want to run up the miles on his leased car. In theory, it seems like you ould, but, you cant. and if you get caught for that, you get screwed. The parents my ex-girlfriend sold their '93 Benz wagon 2 months back with 128k miles to a guy that had just opened a used car lot, her dad saw the car a week later on the lot.....with 60k miles. Needless to say, the lot was shut down. Turns out there was 7 other cars with roll backs.
I had to get my instrument cluster replaced, and it set my miles back to zero. Honda had to put a sticker on the inside of my door sill saying that I had 1450 miles before there replaced it. I'm not sure what the deal is with where the miles are stored...just thought I'd give my 2 cents

C2i, i can do the installation myself, but i don't think the dealer would do the recalibration and let me install it (they got to make $$ somehow). plus, they would want me to leave my car at the dealer for a couple of days. i can get the guage cluster from majestic honda for $150 and if i can find a place that does the recalibration, then i'm all set.
