EXACTLY WHY SRI TAKES AWAY POWER, SRI = WASTE OF MONEY.....CAI = GOOD INVESTMENT

Ok, so i finally got it straight why people say that SRI actually take away power, i was explained this from a guy who knows his sh*t... ok basically what im saying is that SRI actually make your car slower (AT LEAST OFF THE LINE) as opposed to a stock filter system because, your stock system has an air box where the air is always inside, so off the line when you give it gas it basically hardly has to suck in air coz its already in the system, so therefore a CAI is even better coz its getting direct air flow coz its behind your bumper...basically every performance shop out there has told me what a waste of money SRI are... spend the extra few $$$$ and get a CAI, this is not to insult anyone with a SRI, IMO and everyone ive spoken to, you might aswell get an CAI...

Actually your partly right, as you do lose some power with short ram intakes, but you also lose some power with cold air intakes. Your powerband is changed when you install on of these intakes (you remember those graphs with hp/torque ratings at differnet RPM's), so at some RPM's it looses power, while at some it gains power. Short ram intakes do not make your car slower, they have a different powerband, thats all. And the only reason they are differnt than cold air intakes is that they get air from right next to the engine as oppsed to behind the bumper. The air they (short rams) get in is just a little warmer that the "cold air" the cold air intakes get. And no the cold air intakes do not get a "direct airflow", because there is a bumper in front of them! A "direct airflow" is called ram air...

The main point here is not what to buy just because you can, but what you need it for as far as application. SRI's give better power in the high power band, the CAI give better low end power....there is more but when it comes to it I tend to drive fast anyhow so my launches will be slow but a lot of freeway driving I'll take power in the top end.

I prefer the sound of the SRI. Some people don't care for horsepower on a SOHC 1.7L engine.

Hey civictec - did you actually get a CAI on your auto, or did u mean to say SRI ..
I just didn't think the CAI would fit in an auto - at least that's what I heard anyways.

well if you did any research at all you would see that on some cars sri actually make more power than the cai does.

CAI, SRI.... IMO they are both a waste of money.

FEB/MARCH 2002 HONDA TUNING PG. 57:

"A DAC intake system, header and cat-back exhaust system all grace the engine. The header is DC's four-into-one design, and combined with the intake and TCS exhaust, the power gain is a comfortable 5 hp"

WTF?? you gonna spend all that money for a measly 5 hp?

****, i'm not.....
just my opinion.
peace.

go take a science class and learn about air pressure before saying the airbox has air already inside it.....

hey dude, if you got money, why not? your car.

but for me, $200 for an intake, $300 for exhaust, and $400 for headers is not woth 5 HP.

Basically the SRI and the CAI in a car like the 7th gen vic woun't make much of a difference. Cold air yes will bring in colder air BUT that cooler air has to travel A LOT further. As for the SRI the air is a bit warmer but less space for it to travel. It really is a matter of preference. When it comes to a fully tuned car or a race car then yes it will make a difference. There are things that can be done to a SRI that will make the air cold.

That makes absolutly no sense from a physics standpoint. Air isn't 'collected' in greater quantities just because it is in a box. The only way that would make sense is if the air in the box was pressurized, but it's not. What happens is the engine's pistons pull a partial vacuume when they are in their downstroke. There really is no such thing as 'sucking' air, what really happens is outside air pressure is higher than the piston's cylinder and the outside air pushes into the cylinder to equalize the pressure (nature abhores a vacuume). So, in a closed system regardless of it's length, the outside air pressure is the same. Technically if the air box was large enough the engine might be able to draw some air from it as it creates a vacuume in the box itself, but this is negligable in our small example. I'm tired of typing this and I know it's not a good explination, but the orginal reason is not correct.

CAIs are better for perfomance because of the first part (the C). A SRI tends to draw in the warmer engine air, while the CAI the cooler outside air. We know cold is better, so in theory the CAI should be better. In practice air is moving under the hood so the temp difference is not gonna be all that significant
