I went with Valentine 1. From what I've found, they are the best. A bit on the expensive side though. Gotta order right from their site for $400. It's saved me at least 2 tickets already though, so basically paid for itself.

I bought my Escort 8500 detector at Best Buy for $275, or you can order it online, but you have to pay shipping and wait, but on the other hand you have to pay sales tax. I love mine, its saved my *** a few times so its already paid for itself, I don't speed around town but on the Highway its wonderful.

I've got the same one, and it works great. My friend paid about what you paid, but since he sold his car before going off to college. I got it for $100. Funny how this thing was made in Canada. I just found these two links if anyone is interested:

Amazon.com - Bel Radar Detectors

Etonics.com - Bel Radar Detectors

Edit--Here's a question. When (and if) any of you go onto an air force base do the guys at the gate ask you to take down your radar detector? I have several times. So when I have to go on base, I just take it down when they check my ID, and put it back up right after I'm past the gate.
