Any harm in doing a valve clearance adjustment?
Any harm in doing a valve clearance adjustment?
Civic has 214k miles. I was too tired to check / adjust valve clearances when I did my timing belt last month. I'm worried of a potential that the valve clearances might be too tight and burn a valve. At this mileage, is there any risk of doing valve clearance adjustment? It's probably never been done since leaving the factory. If I do it, I plan on adjusting tight valves just within spec on the tight-end, and loose valves just within spec of the loose-end.
I've done valve adjustment with bucket-over-shim sport bikes but I'm still not sure if there's any risk in doing it at this high of a mileage.

Re: Any harm in doing a valve clearance adjustment?
I wouldn't think so. I did mine at 192k miles, don't even think I did that good of a job at it at that, and didn't notice any problems from it. As long as you keep it within tolerances it should be fine. I went back through the set of valves to check the tolerances before closing up.

If anything, it'll help. Definitely keep it within tolerances, and make sure you're doing it with the head cold (<100F)
D17A1 (dx/lx - 1.7L SOHC non-VTEC) adjuster nut torque is 13 ft-lbs (156 in-lb)
D17A2 (ex - 1.7L SOHC VTEC) adjuster nut torque is 14 ft-lbs (168 in-lb)
Intake clearance spec is .007"-.009" (.18-.22mm)
Exhaust clearance spec is .009"-.011" (.23-.27mm)
Every time I did mine on my 2002 civic, I used .008 and .010 feeler gauges for intake and exhaust, respectively.
