weight of 15" steel rims?
Does anyone know how much '01+ EX rims weigh? I want to buy some aftermarket wheels to use with summer/performance rubber, and don't want to go over the stock weight if I can help it. My guess would be 15.15-16.5lbs. Has anyone weighed them?
I 'm also guessing the offset is 45mm as the past 2-3 generation Civic & Integra wheels are..
My first choice is used '99-00 Si 15x6" wheels that weigh 16lbs but those are becoming hard to find.. I found some Borbet Type-B 15x6.5" on Tirerack that weigh 16lbs but I 'm not sure I like those. They 're reasonably priced though and lighter than all the other Borbet 15x7" wheels.
thanks for any info you may have!

People said that the tire and wheel together weigh in at ~40lbs. Someone said the firestone site says the stock tires weight 16lbs but I have never been able to find our tire's model number on their site to verify that. However, if it indeed did weigh 16lbs, that would mean the steelie and cap weigh 24lbs. I recently put 15in rota subs on my car that weight a tad under 13lbs. I never weighed the stock setup but did get on the scale with a steelie and cap and found them to weigh 21lbs.
Have you not looked at rota's line of wheels. They have a new copy of a volk racing rim out I think called the attack. The 15in isn't available yet but is supposed to weigh 9-10lbs and sell for 450-500 for a set.

thanks for the info guys. 40lbs sounds a little high but with the hubcap it's possible. It definitely looks like the steelie itself is over 16 maybe 17lbs which is good news to me. The heavier the stockers are the better it will be when I get lighter wheels, as far as acceleration, handling and steering responsiveness go.
Mbow: Did you notice a change for the better with your 13lb Rota wheels? Do you recommend those?
10lb Rota wheels for $400-500 a set?? That's cheap for an ultra-light wheel! It might be worth the wait. Actually those would be perfect for my GSR which I race, and I can move the Kosei K1s from the GSR to the Civic.. although I don't think the Civic looks as good with the K1s as the GSR does.
One last question: What are some vendors on line with good prices that sell Rota wheels? I don't think Tirerack carries them.
thanks!

Trust me, the steelies are heavy. Just wait until you can pick one up without the tire on it.
I have the rotas on stock tires. I had the tires switched at the local NTB. When I first got back into the car and turned the steering wheel to back out, I was like, What in the Hay! The steering wheel only took half as much force to turn. I couldn't believe it and was shocked out of my mind. I never thought about the steering the light-weight wheels.
As for acceleration, I couldn't directly tell the differnce when accelerating. However, shifting to second produces a little more spin, just a tad more than a chirp, and shifting to third really wants to chirp them as well, but doesn't.
The rotas seem to be of very high quality. I would recommend the brand to anyone. If you only care about weight, I'd wait for the attack to come out. I originally wanted the konig heliums, weigh around 11lbs, but couldn't get any for several months due to such high demand. They were $450 shipped as well.

They both sell the rotas. I got mine from Machiii.net for 450 shipped. Took 2 weeks to get the wheels from the time I ordered! These wheels require tuner style lugs.

Yeah isn't it amazing the difference lighter wheels make? For every 1 lb less wheel weight, you take off 10lbs of unsprung weight, and that's at each corner. This produces more responsive and sharper steering. Coupled with an 1" or more of additional width and you have a faster lane changing better handling car.
I had a '97 Civic HB and bought a set of Borbet Type-T 14x6" (I hate 5" rims) from Tirerack with 195-60 Dunlop D60-A2 tires (back in '99). The stock 14x5" rims were 15.4lbs weighed on my friend's digital scale. The Borbets were 14.1lbs. I noticed the difference right away. Less effort to turn the steering wheel and lane changes became much quicker and accurate.
Thanks for all the vendor info! I went to the Rota site and didn't see the "attack" one anywhere but under "Rota Updates" they did have a brand new wheel that comes in 15x6.5 that 's under 12lbs. It's called: SLIPSTREAM and if you multiply 5.4kg by 2.2lbs it's 11.88lbs. Could it be the one your 're talking about? Under $500 is still very reasonable for an 11.9lb wheel. My Kosei K1 15x7" were $550 and weigh 12.96lbs ea. 9-10lbs should be a lot more expensive and I 'm having a hard time believing it would be under $500 for all 4. 9-10lb wheels are made of special blends of composites and metals and have to go through a special process that makes them strong (bonds the metal blend together). Those usually cost $200-400 each!
The Slipstream doesn't do much for me btw.. Do the subzeros look good on your Civic? I have a blue one and I usually have a hard time visualizing wheels on any of my cars. I have to see a picture of them on my car or see it in real life before I can decide which wheels (and I 've bought many in the last 11yrs) to get.
I hope some of these web sites that sell Rota wheels show you pics of your car with different wheels on like tirerack does..

You can take a look at the subzeros on my sedan by clicking on the link in my signature. I have never been to the rota website nor been able to fine it. Could you post a link for me?
The slipstreams have been out for quite some time now. I almost got those but decided the look wasn't for me either. They are slightly lighter than the subs as you have already noticed.
Rota wheels are cast. I would have preferred forged wheels but they are out of my budget, so my wife says anyway. I wanted the Volk TE-037s. I am familar with the differences in the manufacturing methods and it's easy to see why the forged method is superior. However, on a 15-16" rim with a decent sidewall size, I don't think there is much need for concern.
I found the rota attack on the Group Buy Center site under the "wheels/tires" category. You will have to register with the site to be able to use it.
I would have liked a 16" or 17" rim but the bigger tires increase in weight starts to eat at your weight savings.
Oh, btw.....2.2kg = 1lb ?

The found the link to Rota on my 2nd try. 1st I typed rota.com and got sh*t. Then I tried www.rotawheels.com and wala!
Me register on the groupbuycenter.com? heheh I live on that website I was actually one of the first few people to register there when it came out early '00. I 've spent $2,500 on vendors from the GBC.
1kg = 2.2lbs (you had it the other way around)
I feel the same way about 16 & 17" wheels. The tires cost more plus they slow you down because of more rotational inertia. I 'd even go with 14" because it gives you shorter gearing and your car accelerates a little faster, but you can't find decent tires in 14" (like ZR, WR, etc.) unless you buy Kumho or Hoosier DOT race tires
I 'll go check out the Attack! Thanks for your help. I 'm glad there 's another married person here besides me. I know what you 're talking about.. Most of the stuff I buy for my cars I don't even let my wife know. Less arguements that way and everyone is happy. It's bad enough I race every other weekend. If she knew I was spending a lot of money on my 2 cars she 'd go nuts!

The lightest rims i've come across for racing (15" Racing Hart CP- 035s)
15" x 6" are 7.9 lbs
http://www.wheelspecs.com/specs/wheelmodels/312
http://www.dazzmotorsports.com/
These rims are strong as well. Try & beat 'em!!
The steelies weigh close to 25 lbs. (don't know about the tires)

stock set weighs 40lbs(bathroom scale).
now 500 dollars for the rim??? You must be out of your mind! or have a lot of money guys, that is 2500 with tires . Holy crap. And the worst thing is all these 10lb rims will bend very easy. Well , they are for true enthusiasts. Hope you enjoy them...

"Oh okay, I was more worried that light wheels would mean that your car will slip more in the snow."
The few pounds removed from the rims are not enough weight removed from the entire car to become a problem. You remove inertia, but you still have the weight of the car (minus maybe 15 actual pounds) pushing the tread into the snow.
