starting problem related to gear shift selector

Trying to help my son diagnose a 2003 civic 5 speed problem. it wasn't starting, and he figured out if he pushed down on the rubber fitting over the gear shifter (top end of engine, see pic, where the arrow is pointing), it would start.

As far as I've been able to figure out, there's nothing electrical associated with only the gear selector? I don't think it can be the clutch safety switch, because that cable has nothing to do with the clutch.

This is frustrating... any ideas?

Re: starting problem related to gear shift selector

Try hitting the starter?

edit: for clarification, literally hitting it. When I was having starting problems, I took a 12" socket extension and smacked the crap out of the starter motor.

Re: starting problem related to gear shift selector

Pushing the shift cable end has nothing to do with the starter suddenly working.
(If that pic is actually from your car, that one cable looks like garbage)

If when you twist the key you can hear a loud clunk from the engine compartment but the starter doesn't actually spin, then I'd try hitting the starter first LOL
