2001 civ. LX Timing belt Change
Friend (inexperienced mechanic) 2001 Civic Lx 150,000 miles 1.7L SOHC wanted T. Belt,Water Pump & tensioner changed (original) He assisted me. I foolishly assumed he knew how to align timing marks and install plugs properly. After i had installed Water Pump. He supposedly aligned the timing marks, tensioner and the new Timing belt. I did not verify the marks before he continued the install by my instruction. I lead him through the assembly. Started the vehicle. Run for 5 seconds then stopped. Same start and stop several times. I knew something was wrong. He went home. I disassembled to find crankshaft timing mark off by 60 - 70 degrees and spark plugs loose. After completing the adjustments and reassembly. The vehicle seems as if it has no compression and turns over easily with no start only occasional backfire.
Is it possible that the timing being off that far bent valves therefore no compression?

assuming so, your chances of severe valve damage is about as likely as the sun coming up tomorrow.....
i might understand if it was off by one or two teeth and cut the guy some slack, but 60 degrees?.....holy crap, is he blind?

Yep, +1 there, if you have the timing off by that much you pretty much destroyed your engine.
Now it gotta go to a shop and be pulled apart to install new valves, or just get a used engine. Whatever you find is cheaper....
You may want to reconsider who you call a "friend"

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Pull the top cover and verify cam timing before doing anything else.
Correct that if necessary.
Then if it doesn't run, do a compression test and post the results.
