Noobie... Somebody hollowed out my cat
Noobie... Somebody hollowed out my cat
Hello all. I'm new here. Have an 02 Civic. The previous owner hollowed out the cat. Of course cel is on, and don't mind tricking it. Question is, the car is stock, how bad does it hurt mpg or performance? I appreciate the answers in advance.

Previous owner owes you a passing emissions test within something like 90 days of sale, right?

Ok then...... Some of the cars can suffer a little mileage drop because the computer will try to run tests on the nonexistent cat during each drive cycle, but most people never notice.

It'll prolly smell a lot better than my SV's exhaust, which is muy fruity with the suicide gases and aldehydes from good ol' carbs (not).
This may or may not apply... but my '04 uses an LAF (wideband) sensor in place of the 01-03 threshold O2 sensor... and when I bought it the old O2 sensor was in the upstream position. The car ran like a scalded cat in this condition all the way to redline (downstream was OEM spec), not the worst-case 4000-rpm redline state the PCM sometimes enforces, like with a VTEC solenoid failure or low oil pressure code.
Google 'spark plug non-fouler', and see if that's also a solution you may be able to use to get the PCM fooled enough to reach normal output/mpg. That's an old trick, but in your (highly regrettable
) case, it may work.
