Aftermarket or Honda
Aftermarket or Honda
Hi Guys I know I will catch some flack on this one but here it goes. The guy who will be doing my water pump and timing belt on my 95 civic gave me 2 prices. One is $448.00 with Honda parts and labor and the other is with Napa aftermarket for $325.00 parts and labor. I know how important the TB and WP is to an interfering motor so I plan on spending the extra $ on Honda parts but want an opinion. Is this price reasonable?

It would be damn cheap at the shop I work in.
Ask your shop exactly what all parts are going in with the NAPA choice, since individual part prices vary widely.
NAPA sells kits with the pump, belt, and tensioner pulley for $100-120ish.
Napas cheapest belt and pump are probably $55 total, (therefore probably would generate the most profit for the shop).
Once you figure out exactly what you are getting from that shop for that price quote, call your Honda dealer and ask for an estimate for the exact same thing. Apples to apples.
What about all the accessory belts?? No additional labor since they are removed to do the work (so make sure you aren't being charged extra labor). OEM seems to last longer than most aftermarket choices.
What about the front oil seals for the cam and front crank? Valve cover gasket set?

Yes all cam seals and yes the 3 drive belts are included in the $. ( no extra labor on the belts since they have to take them off to do the job). I will ask the shop for specifics. I know I do want a new water pump, not rebuilt, he did mention gates for the belts but I will see what he is offering. But what Im trying to get is an opinion on is Honda specific water pump and timing belt superior to an aftermarket? Anyone out their go aftermarket on these items with success?
