O2 question? Please help

Ok guys I have a 1996 civic ex with a d16y8 motor. The idiot before me put dc headers with some crazy catalytic converter attached to it. Neither of the o2 sensors are hooked up and my car is running like crap. The cat that is on the car doesn't have a hole for the second o2 sensor. My first question is 1. If I hook the o2 sensor before the cat without hooking the second one up will the car start to run better? My next question is 2. For the second sensor can I just drill a hole in the piping after the cat and plug the o2 sensor in that? Or do I have to save up and buy a new cat. Thanks for the help. I'm new to this forum so idk if I'll get an email with the replies but if not my email is rockstargarwood7@gmail.com thx

Re: O2 question? Please help

Welcome.

1) Maybe. Maybe not.
Depends on what the real cause of the running problems are.
If it really runs like poop, disconnected O2 sensors may not be the problem at all.

See what the rest of the CEL codes are, there may be more important things at fault.

2) Any exhaust shop should be capable of welding in a bung to properly fit the O2 sensor.

Re: O2 question? Please help

I wouldn't necessarily say it's running like poop it's just hesitating a lot and backfiring like an o2 problem or the iacv

Re: O2 question? Please help

putting in the primary o2 sensor in will help, as it controls your fuel/air ratio mixture. the secondary o2 only monitor if your cat is working or not.

Re: O2 question? Please help

I thought that. If I just plug it in Will it instantly start running better or will it take some time to send the signal to the computer. Also thank you for the help

Re: O2 question? Please help

If the sensors aren't the problem, it won't run better.

If the sensors are indeed the problem, I'd expect you would be able to tell a difference within a minute or two.

A pair of working sensors might reveal more issues/codes indicating other problems (such as too lean or rich, cat code, etc.).
