cheap air scoop
I recently had an idea. How to get air up to the stock intake that seems to be sucing air through the sheet metal. So I cut whole in the stock bumper on the pass side fake vent. Then I bought 2.5 feet of hose, ran it up there. On the end that sticks out of the bumper I put on this discharge end plumbing thing with a self tightening ring, This is to create a kind of funnel at the opening to get more air into the tube. It is black so it hides the whole thing. To be extra careful not to be spraying debri all into my engine room I bought some metal window screen patches and cut one into the right shape and fit it into the cap. The other end slip right into the stock intake but not to far as to block all flow for when you are idling or not going that fast then it can still breathe. I just put it in about 1.5 inches enough to get the air from the yube into the intake. The hose i bought was 1.25 in. bilge pump hose, its white and ribbed for flexiness and mutual pleasure. The whole thing cost about 10 bucks and took about 10 min. to set up. At acceleration and moderate speed and up it should be bring a lot of air up to the intake more than it gets now and cold too! Bring your women with you when you buy the stuff needed. My fiance became invaluable when we went shopping. She almost finalized the whole setup. God i love her.

I haven't really had enough time to fully evaluate it but the theory behind it works unless all the talk about CAI's is bullshit. I have set something up that blows more air into to intake at a lower temp. sure it has to go through the stock boxes but it starts off at a better place then if i were sucking air out of the engine bay like before. I can't dyno it because the air only blows when the car is moving through the air. I will be going on a small driving trip on the freeway for about an hour so I will see then how much difference it makes in all the gears and such as far as acceleration.

oh and one more thing. does anyone have any idea what the hell is inside that big *** box that first connects to the intake. I can't take it apart so i iwas wondering why it is so big. shouldn't it just be a tube that runs from the intake to the filter?

i can't really give pictures because most of the set up is inside the frame of the car out of sight. If you think about the ingredients, and what it is supposed to accomplish then you probably can figure out your own way to do it. I suggest you cut a hole in the pass. side fake vent next to the radiator down low. You know the one that would be open if it were an aftermarket bumper. Cut around the outside along the seam just the three top sides but leave the bottom seam and fold it down a little. This will hold the end of the tube in place. get something for the end of the tube that can act as a funnel to make the tube end bigger thus scooping more air. the end piece should be black to avoid looking cheap. I took a ride today and i think it really made a difference. Once you get going the air starts to flow and that can only be good. Also I was thinking if you could take apart the big box and place a tube in it equal to the size of the rest of the intake system then you could bypass the big box and all its restrictions. Then it would look stock and no dealership could challenge it since they couldn't see it. just a thought
what are you going to do when you've clogged your engine up with all the crap you arn't filtering and it takes a dump? it doens't sound like you have any type of filtering other then the piece to keep the muck out of the engine bay.
ghetto rigging anything to your engine is a bad idea.

whats gonna get through fine screen?
i put some of that in the opening of my contraption.
and what about the stock filter? I never said i changed any of that.
what if i didn't have a hood would my car still run?
would i muck it up then?
i think not that's why i have a filter in the box thank you.

Here is another way to do it:
Get some kind of tubing at least 2"+ in diameter. Such as Dryer Vent tubing. Something with ridges in it (to catch moisture).
Run the Tubing from the front bumper (lower grille) to the box right over the TB (the one with the filter in it) & get yourself a K&N filter.
Might look ghetto, but it will work.
Wa-La! CAI.
OR! You can use the IDEA listed here for the Iceman Filter Shield. Modify it so the bottle completely surrounds the filter and get yourself some CAI from your SRI or whatever.
Or go crazy & cut a hole in your hood above the TB. Get some short tubing that will fit over your TB that is long enough to attach to a CAI type filter. Stick that bastard sraight up out the hood..

the idea you had of conecting the pipe to the TB is good. but very ghetto.
I want to figure out how to run the tubing through the stock resonator right to the filter. that's my next project. if you can help let me know. i think we are on the right track and we might come up with a 7thGenCivic type CAI who knows. Let's put our brains together.

even if it is ghetto i give ya props for at least havin' the ***** to get in there and just start tryin' - that's where stuff gets started.....never know, we may have a bad a$$ cold air intake DIY in a few weeks off of this.........g'luck

this probably isn't too hard to do for our cars. just follow the AEM CAI installation instructions, and instead of the AEM, just make one of these things. supposedly, when done right, works even better than manufactured intakes. I'm gonna try this, but not 'till after senior prom (5/18)

Ok I have run my car w/o and with my cheap CAI, and I noticed an increae in performance with it. On the Freeway when you are already going fast it makes a huge difference since the air is blowing in at a high rate. Much like a turbo. I am forcing air into the engine using my speed to do it. I think a piece of cotton filter or something similar under the wire screen is a good idea to keep dust out. But over all it looks cool on the outside like you have something really cool on the inside and it works great. Try it before you knock it. the idea will work on an already existing CAI by running the tube to the filter of a AEM CAI or any other for that matter.Blowing cold fresh air under force to a filter is somethng to try.
