ignition timing D16Y8

I just replaced cylinder head and now car runs smooth but wanted to verify ignition timing anyways. I hooked up timing light and when its pointed on the crank pulley when the timing light lights up I see a white mark I believe this is top dead center my question is before I rotate the distributor what do I have the timing light degree setting set to and what am I looking for on the crank pulley as in a white mark when the light flashes or a red mark?

Re: ignition timing D16Y8

You MUST jumper the SCS connector before checking the timing. This puts timing control in "base mode", removes computer control of the timing (so the mark won't jump around while you are trying to set it.)

Red mark is the timing mark (12* BTDC on most)
White mark is the TDC mark.

Re: ignition timing D16Y8

and make sure the light is pointed straight down the markings on the lower timing cover to ensure the mark on the pulley and marks on the cover are lined up as the light blinks
