Burning lots of oil, carbon buildup.

Burning lots of oil, carbon buildup.
So I'm burning like 1/2 a quart every 2 weeks and maybe more. There are no leaks anywhere, I'm sure of it. My head cover is black with carbon underneath, and it used to be golden. Could it be the valve seals? Could exhaust really go upward past the seals to the head cover?
