ezone....trany n eng fitting on bottom of radiator

ezone i need your help again lol...and anyone who can help me plz
so i put a new radiator on and i saw this yellow tape covering the bottom fittings saying if i striped it the warranty would be void...so i tighted them a lil more than hand tight and now its leaking oil and the oil radiator fluid....

so my question is 1. how tight are they suppose to be? im worried about over tightening them and having to buy another radiator...i still have the old radiator but is there a certain tool to use to put them on a with a certain torque? 2. do i have to take it all off to tighten them or do you think its possible to just lift the front end and tighten it like that? thanks bro

Re: ezone....trany n eng fitting on bottom of radiator

1) PM me if you need my attention. I can't be on here 24/7...I have a real job and all that.

2) Aftermarket radiator? (Toss it back to the Zoo for lifetime warranty, don't tell them what really happened.)

3) Were the trans cooler fittings already installed and tight?

4) Did you REALLY need to mess with them?

5) What type of fittings are they? What makes the seal? O rings? Compression? Tapered? Single flare? (Flare fittings do have to be rather tight to make a good seal , but if you let the stationary part turn, then it may have broke its seal between the cooler and the tank.

6) OMFG you got coolant leaking too? Is there a LARGE nut around each fitting that secures the cooler guts to the radiator tank? Like this pic (similar)

7) Got pics of the problem?

8) Y/M/M etc. so I know what car you have.

9) How about yank it back out and take it to the parts store, have those guys tighten the fittings so you aren't the one that breaks it?

10) Were there any tightening specs or instructions that came with the new unit?

11) Change it all to an external trans cooler?

Some pics of basic construction, none of these are Honda

Re: ezone....trany n eng fitting on bottom of radiator

ok sorry about that

2) Aftermarket radiator? ya its this one from autozone http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...2688_266534_0_

3) Were the trans cooler fittings already installed and tight? No the "Accessory Pack # ACPK178 Contains: 1 x Oil Cooler Fitting Hose Barb 10mm; 1 x Oil Cooler Fitting Hose Barb 10m" the gold piece that goes into the lower 2 hoses and needed to be tightened to the radiator is what is leaking. I'm guessing i clearly didnt tight both enough since i was trying not to strip it or overtighten it

4) Did you REALLY need to mess with them? I had to connect them since it didnt come connected

5) What type of fittings are they? What makes the seal? O rings? Compression? Tapered? Single flare? (Flare fittings do have to be rather tight to make a good seal , but if you let the stationary part turn, then it may have broke its seal between the cooler and the tank....
I'll have to post a pic when i take it off around 6 at the latest central time. but there extremely large compared to the stock one itd have to be like a size18-22 wrench the 16 wouldnt even come close to fitting it

6) OMFG you got coolant leaking too? Is there a LARGE nut around each fitting that secures the cooler guts to the radiator tank?

no both are on the bottom of it its the 2 real skinny hoses that connect to bottom of radiator

7) Got pics of the problem? will post them up at 6

8) Y/M/M etc. so I know what car you have. 05 civic ex 2dr auto

9) How about yank it back out and take it to the parts store, have those guys tighten the fittings so you aren't the one that breaks it?

THAT IS A AWESOME idea seriously I shouldve taken it out and inspected it and had them do it there but i thought it wouldve came completly assembled. I'll do that and get back to you if it solved the problem below (10)

10) Were there any tightening specs or instructions that came with the new unit? on the instructions it said see owners manual for specific tightening..its not in the owners manuel

11) Change it all to an external trans cooler?
is that more reliable?

thanks bro i appreciate it

You know how to tell when threads start to strip, don't you?

on the instructions it said see owners manual for specific tightening..its not in the owners manuel
Service manual. No specs found. Factory radiators are already assembled.

Common (mechanical) sense should prevail.

is that more reliable?
Well, it would get you out of this jam if you can get the radiator to not leak antifreeze, right?

It was just a thought.

Um, this.
Experience of having already stripped plenty of fasteners prior to this, and REMEMBERING what they felt like JUST BEFORE THEY STRIPPED. Quit tightening before they get to that point.

The moment the fastener starts to get loose again instead of tightening more, it's too late.

Memory tends to operate much more efficiently if one has to actually fix their own f***ups several times.

Same goes for breaking stuff.

Oil change? Engine oil doesn't go anywhere near the radiator. It's ATF.
