Questions regarding Rear Spoiler and paint
I went to both trakauto and pepboys and they didnt have anything resembling paint sealer. Both peopl I spoke to at each store said that after I drive the 4 hols for the spoiler into the metal I can just spray on a clear coat (from the bottles they sell) and it would be fine. Would this work or should I get a paint sealant so the paint doesnt start to peel off. I also dont want the metal to start to rust.
Buy some primer and a clear coat color close to you car color(the holes will be under the spoiler anyways). make sure you sand the drilled holes clean before you apply the primer or else it will still rust. I would say put on at least two coats of primer and then the clear coat to finish it off.
I spent about $30 in all, and got professional results*ahem*if I do say so myself...
All materials bought at Pep Boys, except for touch-up paint, bought at dealer:
Clearcoat (small can) - $3.49
Rust proofer(?) stick - $4.99
Gray primer - $4.99
Tack cloth - $.99
Masking tape - $2.99
Satin Silver Metallic touch-up paint - $7.50
Procedure:
After the holes have been drilled, deburr them with a round file--or something similar--then clean the area with the tacky cloth.
Apply rust proofer, concentrating on the bare metal edges. Reapply if desired.
Mask off the area around the holes--I used Ziplock bags, split open and tape applied to the edges.
Cover the trunk area with some old newspaper.
Spray a few coats of the primer, allowing it to dry in between coats.
Apply touch-up paint--it comes as brush-on only
, so you need to apply many thin coats.
Apply 3-4 coats (my preference) of clearcoat, again, allowing it to dry in between coats.
You are now ready to install your spoiler!
Sorry for the lengthy post...hope it helps ya.
