is my damaged Si too good to let it go?
is my damaged Si too good to let it go?
Hi. I am new to this Forum.
My 2004 Si had an accident a few weeks ago, not sure what to do with it now. I have only liability insurance. The car was hit at the right front side at the 90 degree angle. The engine is OK, as well as the front wheels/tires. The car has 197K highway miles and has been taken care of by an excellent independent mechanic on the regular basis. My mechanic (he is pretty expensive) suggests to fix it for $6,500, which will include $2,500 for the new nose.
I would appreciate any thoughts...

if its a mostly stock si, you could almost buy another used one for the cost it would be to fix it. that looks like major work (mechanical and body) not to mention the airbags all deployed. usually for frontal collisions like this one, the car never drives the same again. if it was in the rear i might say fix it, but its a lot of money for 8 yr old car. you could put the 6500 towards a lil bit older and nicer different car.

I think the first thing I would do would be get the book value of the car so you have some idea what it will be worth after you repair it. I would also check and see what used cars you can find in your area so you have an idea what you will do if it is not repaired. Another thing is that most autobody shops will warn you about hidden damage. That $6500 may change if they find additional damage when they start the repairs.
Should you repair it? I don't know. Look at the seams and how the panels match. Sometimes a hit will rack a car and depending on the shop it may never be straight again. Another thing, 197,000 miles is a fair amount. Even if the engine is good, those miles are on every other part of the car as well.
