08 civic oil?

Ho everyone,

I have been taking my civic in to Honda lately for oil changes I have been told my car takes synthetic/synthetic blend but I jus found out Honda has been putting in conventional oil. Would this effect gas mileage wear on the engine or anything that could become major? Please let me know. It also has been burning threw this oil way faster then any other vehicle I have had

I also take my 08 civic to dealer for oil change and I've been told that they are using synthetic blend. I've been using premium gas to fill up my tank and my gas mileage still the same.

Re: 08 civic oil?

Depending on who you ask some people say that you can go from conventional to synthetic but you shouldn't go from synthetic to conventional. The reason being is that the synthetic affects the seals differently then conventional and can cause them to swell or shrink. I havnt seen any proof of this, but synthetic does have different additives in it so it makes sense. I switch my 01 from conventional to synthetic and havnt had any problems. Synthetic lubricates and cools the engine better and last longer.

For an 08 no.. while oil is oil, the higher end stuff wont make a huge difference in performance on a newer car.. this is my opinion but i know there are a lot of threads about this too...

Unless your car requires it (like my 531 rwhp Z06), you dont need it, as long as you change your oil every 3-5k miles its ok.

I personally like changing it every 3k in all of my cars, its easy to do, cheap, and could possibly prevent problems down the road, the maintenance minder shows about 70% life left, but thats not what I go by.

Re: 08 civic oil?

it wont prevent an expensive cat converter repair down the road. new oil "flash-off" damages the converter so the more oil changes you do, the more it will fail early. not a part i would want to replace as the oems go for over $1k due to them actually working as designed (lots of expensive metals inside compared to aftermarket junk).
