So I just picked my DD up on Saturday, no problems during inspection that a buddy or myself could find, When I got it home I realized it was a little low on oil, so I put in some cheap Motormaster 10w-30 oil until I do a full change on the weekend. I may have put a little to much in but I figured it would burn off.

Is this much smoke normal? (just click link for vid)



Sunday was the worst, but now when the engine is cold, when I first start it up and drive for the first min, it smokes then goes away after a minute or so of driving.

After further exam I looked into the coolent overflow tank and noticed this.




So I believe my headgasket is on its way out the door. Car is stock with 217 KMs on it.

Ive searched and I just want confrimation on my believes, lol

Your head gasket is not on the way out. Your head gasket is destroyed and its destroying the rest of the engine with it. I think you should stop driving it right away and get it fixed, it might be too late already.

Overfilling oil is one of the worst things you can do. What happens is the oil sits on the crankshaft and foams up and becomes literally useless inside the engine.

Yeah, just as I thought. Looks like Imm be ***** deep in a DIY this weekend.

Wouldnt it be constantly be smoking though? Not just for a min or so? Also would it being setting off any engine codes, or maintenance light?

What happens is the car sits idle and the cooling jackets seep coolant into the cylinders. When you start the car up the excessive amount of coolant is burned off quickly spewing out of the exhaust. Once it burns that coolant it only burns what is leaking into it. So it smokes far less. The only trouble sign inside the cabin of a head gasket gone wrong is overheating. You may get a CEL for misfire but often you won't get that.

It wasn't smoking when you tested it out probably because the person took it for a bit of a drive before you got that. Elusive fu$&*#

I finially got CELs today. The car started spitting and sputtering. I parked it tonight. Looked at the spark plugs which are all fouled up. The coils may have gotten a bit wet as well from when I washed the engine bay last night.

Tomorrow night I'll be doing a compression and leak down test. I'll provide more details then. I sure hope it's not the bottom end needing work.

I changed up the plugs today. Magically it solved the the engine code problem, but I am still smoking a ton. Tests will be done tonight later on.

Coil packs discolor. I wouldn't be overly concerned about it. However, the white on the spark plug is a bit of a concern.

Here are the results after the Compression and Leakdown. I forgot to remove the rad cap off to see if there were bubbles. I may have to take that test over again. My friend that helped out believed its a bad valve seal Cyl 3.

For starters your motor takes 5w-20.
That much smoke is nowhere near normal.

Dont overfill the oil..

I am almost certain your destroying your O2 sensors and catalytic converter. So stop driving it like mentioned above is a good idea.

What does your coolant look like?
Your burning oil at the very least, however all that oil in the coolant is troubling.

Has a "stop leak" product ever been used in your vehicle?

I assume it overheats..?

I dont believe that product has been put in. Also the vehicle ran great as the seller told me when I purchased it a week ago, lol.

Thats the wierd thing, it never over heated once on me.

So I managed to get the head off tonight. Thank god for that Head gasket and timing belt DIY. It saved alot of time and hassle.
Im taking the head to a shop in the am to get cleaned up and see what the problem is. Were kinda leaning towards vavle seals atm.
Let me know what you guys think.
Also let me know how you think the timing belt looks?

^ Are you talking about my timing belt + hg DIY? If you are I'm really happy people are finding it useful!

Since you have the head off here is what I would do:

Replace the head gasket (obviously)
Take the head to a machine shop and get them to check it over. If they make no mention of the valve seals being shot it might be your piston rings
It really does not matter what the timing belt looks like... replace it, your there anyway. Also, remove your water pump and check it over.. Oh yes and replace the tensioner and it looks like your crankshaft seal is leaking there.

I don't remember there being that much oil in the cylinders when I pulled my head.

Seems like you have it all figured out so just keep going man. You will have that thing fixed up in no time.

I got a call from the shop today. I have 8 valve guides that are bad and I need a plane. I forgot to ask what the measurement was. So in the end I'll have a rebuilt top end, new head gasket, seals done. Also a neww timing belt and water pump. All which I knew I wwas going to have to replace, just not this soon lol.

Well, on the bright side the car should last a long time now Just about all your maintenance is done.
