2007 LX Oil Leak

2007 2DR LX, Manual Transmission.

I was in for an oil change and the dealer found an oil leak around the lower passenger side of the engine. They cleaned it off and asked me to come back in a week for a closer look.

Google brought it me here and after reading these:
Oil Pump Seal Leak?
2011 Civic oil leak
Civic LX 2008 Oil Leak--please help

I followed the advice and got the engine detailed/degreased (the engine compartment was a mess). I already own a uv flashlight and yellow shooting goggles, so adding uv dye to the oil sounded reasonable. I warmed it up, drove it around the freeway, did full open throttle / high RPMs... Nothing. It wasn't until I drove a few hundred miles to/from work at normal speeds (I normally keep it under 3k RPM) that the engine got nasty and started to glow, oil weaping out around the bottom.

The dealer put it up on the hoist and verified the location of the leak. They want to replace the gasket around the crank shaft, part 91212-RTA-003 which I believe is the same as the #28 oil seal here (Edit: it's actually #12 in the link below). Just over $300 for the job with a 12 mos / 12,000 mi warranty.

That sounds reasonable to me. Any objections or suggestions on how to proceed? Would it be reasonable to ask the dealer to steam clean the block when they are finished so I can keep an eye on it?

Link fail. Part fail. Something just went haywire there.

You want this link, and part #12 here: http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...UMP+%281.8L%29

Common name is a front crank seal. I have done a few, and they can really make a mess when they leak a lot.

Unless you mean the chain tensioner cover, which is right above it (#4), it would get resealed--not replaced. That's probably $50-100 depending on how greedy they are.

Alldata says----(oh hell, nobody would really understand how labor works) {2 X labor rate}, plus the checkout time for them to find the leak.
You would be around or a little over $300 here for the crank seal, so it sounds good to me.

For that price, I would expect a general clean up of the mess. I wouldn't expect it to be spotless, but at least give it a decent effort.

Re: 2007 LX Oil Leak

That is all very helpful. There is oil covering the face of the that #4 chain case cover. They said the wheel can throw it all over the place, but I'll keep an eye on it after all of this is done.

Thanks for the link and vote of confidence. I'll follow up a week or so after the repair is completed.

Re: 2007 LX Oil Leak

So far so good. The dealer replaced the seal and it was $325 out the door (the part itself cost $16). They cleaned the engine really really well. The chain tensioner cover (15112-RNA-A00) is spotless and dry too. I took pictures from above and below for later reference in case I ever see oil coming out again. Fingers crossed that I won't have to go back until the next maintenance!
