ok to switch to synthetic?
ok to switch to synthetic?
hi i did a search but i got too many topics to look through all of them, plus my question is kinda personalized. i was wondering if i can switch to synthetic or semi-synthetic on my car now that it is at around 27k? i heard if you switch too late that oil is more likely to leak, since it is slippier than regular oil. if you don't really know the answer, feel free to just post opinions. oh yea what are the dangers of going to synthetic back to regular (i.e. the dealer changes my oil as part of a major service interval)?

i switched, i dont remember when, i went to oil express and they put some kinda cleaner through it first to clean out the old stuff and all the grime, and then put it in the full syn that is. im not at 27k yet so i don tknow
<< It's allright to switch.. too late is like after 80K miles once the seals are worn.. then it's a bad bad thing..
But for you it's good..really good!!! >>
I never had a problem with that in my old Celi with 100K and M1 synthetic oil. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me since you can compensate with larger gaps by using a heavier weighted oil. If the crude and synth are both the same weight it shouldn't really matter. If anyone has any real proof of this wife's tale, I'd be interested to hear it.
I live by Mobil1 and think it adds a little performance increase. Mobil is switching to a different formula for M1 that makes it not really a synthetic. I think I will have to do some research before I do my next change
yes its okay to switch now

Synthetic oil is smoother.. better lubrication so less wear on the engine. I figure that you can always go back to conventional oil because the seals stay tighter with the synth. But once you use that conventional oil for a while, there's no turning back.

I am most likely going to synthetic when I do my first oil change. I have somewhere around 4k and plan to gethe the 1st change at 5k. I do everything at the dealer so it depends on what they say when I get there.
