new (to me) 95 Hatch 5 speed

just bought a 95 Hatch...the seller said he changed the engine to a 1.6 Vtec...the engine is a D16Y5...what do these numbers/letters indicate, and how can I tell if it really is a Vtec?? he didn't say what year the engine was, so do these numbers tell me that?? also, was told by O'reilly man that all 1.6s 96 on were Vtec...is that a fact?? now, the problems with the car...it had a bad clutch jerk in 1st gear pulling out, so I replaced the slave cylinder, and that fixed 95% of the problem, but there's still some there...I thought I bled it plenty, maybe not?? the seller said he replaced the clutch, pressure plate, and bearing when he changed the engine (10K miles ago), so assuming he did and did it correctly, what else could be causing the problem?? (I bought the slave cylinder @ AZ, and have heard of bad "new" parts, but its such a simple part I wouldn't think it would be bad) next problem...i didn't notice this on the drive home after buying the car, but a couple of days later, my speedometer went crazy..jumping around, not working at all, working, etc...I replaced the speed impulse sensor (with two different ones from a junk yard) and still doing the same thing...could this have something to do with the engine swap?? I also tried one of the j/y sensors in a friends 1.5 and it didnt work in his car either, so I'm thinking they're just both bad since I've heard this is a weak link in the Hondas...next problem...I started smelling what i would describe as a too rich mix exhaust smell, and shortly after, the check engine light came on...now its not on when I start the car, but usually comes on within 25 miles or so...I'm figuring this is the 02 sensor...soooo, 2 sensors in a week??? the engine in this car was spotless, so I figure it was Gunk'd...is it probable that this is what killed the sensors?? if so, are there other sensors that I need to check out?? last problem..the A/C...seller said he put too much freon in it and popped a pressure valve...the clutch kicks in when you turn it on, but it doesn't get cold...when I turn it on while driving, it feels like it's kicking in and out almost constantly, and it seems like its a more than normal load when it kicks in....sounds like a lot of problems, but I think they're pretty simple as long as it doesn't get into something done wrong with the swap, and the air doesn't really matter altho it would be nice to have it...aside from this, the car is in great shape, one owner, got lots of power, smooth shifting, tight suspension...this is my 5th hatch, but never dealt with the Vtec or the 1.6...I've used these forums before with other vehicles, and it always amazes me that if the problem is precisely explained, SOMEBODY is gonna hit the fix dead on, and as many Hondaholics as there are out there, I know somebodys got my answers...one more ?? tho...the parts stores can't code the "check engine" for 95-back...is this a dealer only thing or can it be diagnosed another way (I remember years ago something about hooking a meter up to something and counting the blinks when you turned the switch on and the number of blinks told you what you problem was...I guess this was kinda pre-computer diagnosis) anyway, thanks for any help

Welcome aboard. But please, for future reference, use paragraphs. A wall of text isn't a great way to get things answered on boards. To figure out if you have a VTEC motor, just look for the VTEC solenoid. Looks like this:

Car running rich is fouling your o2 sensors, so you could be looking at a MAP or MAF sensor(not sure which one off the top). You didn't get the code(s) for the MIL?
As for Honda motors and their designation, this link is a great resource.

Re: new (to me) 95 Hatch 5 speed

-I'm thinking 1 of the new cylinders is bad out of the box.

-Get a new gauge cluster. OEM are like $250. Find a used one here: http://www.car-part.com/ Or if you're close enough to one: http://www.picknpull.com/check_inventory.aspx

-How to check for codes: http://check-engine-light-codes.blog...retrieval.html

-Let me research some on the A/C and get back to ya.

Please post back with results.
