I'm replacing a blown d17a1 with a used vtec - same year - 2001. I don't have and really can't afford the vtec ecu so I'd like to put in the vtec motor with it's harness. Then down the road put in an ecu when I find one that fits my budget.
Will that work?

yea will work just fine, only you wont have the wires to hookup to a few things. Another oil sensor and vtec solinoid i belive. everything should run just fine though
