Evaporator replacement - Civic 2001 LX
Evaporator replacement - Civic 2001 LX
Hi all.
This is my first post. Besides that, English is not my first language, so please be patient
I have a Civic 2001 LX in need of an AC evaporator replacement. Every shop I call tell me a different story, so I figured I would come here and ask real people what they think. Any help will be much appreciated.
1) One guy told me he works only with original parts and all the other guys will try to sell me a made-in-China evaporator. Is that a real issue? How do I know if this guy is really selling me an original Honda evaporator?
2) Some guys say they will have to dismantle the whole dash, while others say they only need to open part of it to replace the evaporator. Which one is true? (this is important because it affects the price)
3) Repairmen appear to not have a good sense of time. One of them says he will need to have the car for 4 or 5 days, other says it will take him 3 days to do the job, another yet says it only takes one day of work. Who is trying to lure me?
Thank you all.

No, it is not necessary to pull the dash. Remove the ecm bracket, the blower box, then the evap. I looked it up in my manual to be sure. Do you know it is leaking there or just guessing? The best way to find it is to inject some uv dye in the system, run it, then actually access the evaporator and black light the core itself. In lue of that, you can stick a sniffer down the vent with the blower on the lower a/c setting you can get. This is not fool proof unless the core has a giant leak, which is unlikely. The dye is the best way, but not always possible. Some shops will pressure up the system with dry nitrogen and try to find it that way too. It isn't impossible that the evap is leaking, but often that is the first place shops call out just because they can't find the leak and 95% of the time that is not it....
