shop says my tranny is done

my 94 civic dx hatchback has been running funny lately. while stepping on the gas, my car just stops accelarating for awhile then starts again. it also lags to change gears. its an automatic with 244,XXX miles on it. they said something about not wanting to change the tranny fluid because they think it might mess up the tranny more.

thanks in advance for your help
very much appreciated

From my understanding, it's the Flush you wanna avoid as it forces the fluid out. A drain and refill would be wiser. I'll let some of the others chime in on that one though.

Re: shop says my tranny is done

It's safer because a flush can push things around and can cause future problems. I've heard nothing but bad things about them. Even my transmissions teacher says a drain and fill is a better alternative. A little old fluid isn't going to kill anything. Besides the fluid, keeping your cooling system in good condition prolongs your transmission as heat is a major cause of tranny failure, mainly in slushboxes. You never get ALL the fluid out during the change, but it a few drain and fills should help it. I got that info from the guys on here, so if any of the 7th gen guys chime in, they should have more info on why you should flush an automatic transmission.

If its too late, you could have torque converter pieces in your tranny, that or you could have a clogged ''clutch'' within the tranny itself, Or even a clogged pathway in the converter.

Lol.... Goodluck. I had this problem, ended up selling the car for 600$... After dropping $3k into it. The car itself cost 1.2
