I don't have an 8g Civic, but I would attribute the light to the heat created by the little lights.. those little bulbs produce quite a bit of heat

thats what i was wondering because it gets pretty damn hot sometimes, one time i was driving it and i put my hand on there and after about 3 seconds i had to take it off because it was so hot.

yeah nothing should be getting that hot except the bulbs. i dont think the newer civics switched to led dash yet but maybe?

There are ducts in the console for the rear heat outlets, some have reported the plastic piping coming disconnected and heating up the console.
