Hopefully he is willing to pay for the damages? Did you obtain a police report?

You should have gotten a police report. If he decides not pay, you will probably have to file a lawsuit aganst him and the process is very, very, slow. Hopefully, everything will work out for ya.

Mbow is pretty much correct. He could *technically* (most people don't know this though) say he has no idea who you are, and deny ever hitting your car when you come looking for your $$. Thats why its important to have an officer respond and write up a report that goes to the DMV so that it is on file. You will have to sue him in small claims court if he does not want to pay, or plays games. Maybe in your state you can file a report after the fact, but in New York, the officer has to respond to make their own report. In any event, take care of getting the estimate ASAP so as not to let too much time pass to give the individual that hit you ideas of weasling out of paying you...

Well I doubt he'll do that, I'm just saying that people have done that before when they don't want to pay for an accident where there is no police report. I don't think you'll have much of a problem assuming you get him an estimate within the next couple of days.

yeah this just happened to my wife. i work for the police department and the officer wouldn't do a report because he said there wasn't enough damages. i got on the radio and made him cause i got jack once. the people never paid me, he was a student who moved and i never got a hold of him. but since you have his info, you should call the police dept if he wont pay cause they can look for damages on both cars and compare damage. they can at least establish that the two cars hit each other then he can't deny it happened anymore

I'm not sure about other states, but here in New York, we have two types of accidents--reportable and non-reportable. A reportable accident requires those parties involved in the accident to contact police. A reportable accident is defined as property damage in the amount of $1000 or more, and/or injury to any person. A non reportable accident is an accident where there is PD (property damage) less than $1000 and no personal injuries. Either way, it is possible to have the police write something up, but this is for New York. I am unaware how other states do it.

same here in IN but its only 750. in the report the officer said he though it could be buffed out and not need any paint because it was a small scratch and he was only doing the report cause i insisted. the estimate came back to 1300 i was like thank god for the report
