CEL P0301 & P1399 on a Civic LX 2000

Hello, I'm new here.. "Search" doesn't seem to be working for me so I posting this question.

I filled my gas tank the other night and the next morning CEL came on and car almost turned off while idle. Went to Autozone and I got CEL P0301 & P1399.

* Cylinder 1 misfire

Probable cause:
Blocked EGR passage
Valve clearance out of range

I am not a mechanic but my dad can help me, I was wondering if this is something DIY?

I googled a few things but got varied results. Thought possibly cleaning EGR passage could fix it, saw this video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8N-SE047VY ) then realized my car doesn't look like that under the hood, I can't even find my EGR

Does a 2000 Civic LX have an EGR?

The vehicle has 130k miles and has not had the timing belt replaced. I realize I need to replace ASAP. That's not DIy for me so will have to take to a certified mechanic, however I want to try to get this CEL P0301 P1399 problem resolved on my own.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Here's a photo of my car:

Maybe someone can point out the EGR for me or any area I should clean/troubleshoot in

What year is your Civic, it looks very similar to my 98. I don't know about the EGR but I would start with something simpler first like the spark plugs or wires. I have changed the timing belt on my daughters 2004 SI, it was not too bad. The 98 is simpler, what area do you live in?

It's a 2000 Civic.. I already changed spark plugs, still getting CEL and engine is sputtering and feels like it's gonna shut off when idle.

How many miles do you have on the engine? it might be your spark plug wires. I've also heard P1399 is a general misfire, so if the spark plug wires do not fix it, then check your distributor.

ha i had the same code 1399 it was a crank position sensor, my issue was that i did an engine bay wash and i guess it caused the sensor to arc out and making each cylinder misfire but after a couple of day the water dried up and my civic runs like a charm !

Hello Guys,

I've been having the same problem lately and here are my progress so far:

Noticing that my car as been Misfiring or ''bucking''
I went with fire tune-up;
Changed :
  1. plugs
  2. spark plug wires
  3. distro cap and rotor
  4. ignition coil
by then i was sure that it wasn't fire related : timing was not changed and timing belt wasn't touched
So I stardted looking for fuel problem, I did scan the computer at this point and it throws in that order : P0302,P0301,P0304,P0300,P1399 with a freeze frame on NO.2.
So i tested all injectors with a multimeter, all coil omhs where 11.40 more or less 0.02 so I left up that that one was shot.
I tested incoming voltage from the ECM all where looking fine.
I tought maybe one of them is stuck so full tank of supreme, octane booster, injector cleaner wich is a lil trick someone gave me and said if theres is so differance at all before and after it might not be a stuck injector.
So after all these small swaps not helping i when to a good known to me garage and checked it up with the mecanic, what we could came up is :
  1. engine runs fine plenty of oil up in head
  2. when cylinder 1 or 3 or 4 are unplugged either injector or spack plug engine runs worst
  3. internal compression in some cylinders are round 160 to 170 But
  4. cylinder 2 as 0
we looked with a camera in Mister.2 and there is plenty of gas so gas isn't burned but means that gas is getting in thought.
We their taking the head off tomorow to see if a valve is shot?
taking apart that I looked at every problem by myself or even with the mecanic in witch I took ative part of the job and did not come up with any other possibility (exept : shrunk piston rings or weirdly blown head gasket ( but wouldn't have 0 only on cylinder 2, right ??? ) ...

Anyhow if it help someone else have a good read becose it seam like a pain in the A**

^^ Well, if cylinder 2 has no compression that's your problem. Usually no compression is a bad headgasket, bad oil rings, or valve clearance is out of spec. I would start with a check/adjustment of the valves then check for headgasket failure.

Sorry, didn't mean to sound uppity. Let's hope it's the headgasket, otherwise it may be cheaper to just buy a running engine and change 'em out.

Maybe it would have but the head is off and it was a burned out valve ( hole was as big as a big pen ) anyhow there putting a new setup of valves new gasket, new water pump, new timing belt all up should help it out 8-)
