i don't have a cai, but from what i heard, it only hurts the engine when it's completely submerged into water(that's also the only time the bypass will work) so.. it's pretty much careful where u are driving... kinda deal

it would be tough to find water deep enough to completely submerge your filter, and even if you could find it, common sense would tell most people to stay out. i've had my CAI since december (AEM) and it's rained a ton here in peoria and i haven't had a problem at all. it's nothing to be worried about, and just watch where you're driving.
Unless you routinely run your car through mud puddles 2 - 3 feet deep you shouldn't have a problem at all..... the filter is basicly enclosed inside the front bumper and fender rain will not directly hit or roll onto the filter so there is next to nil chance that you will hydrolock your engine in just rain. Just avoid swimming pools while driving

I have an injen cai and did have a problem one time. I washed my car then drove to school about an hour later. The car kinda stuttered and just ran irratically for about 20mins. I don't know for sure if it was the cai or not but it's the only thing I can attribute the engines behavior to. I haven't had a problem since that time though.
Mine's not even 2 week's old in my engine bay - running an AEM CAI: no troubles here- nothing but purring and roaring
Have you tried looking elsewhere in your engine for these problems? If it is the intake, maybe it was the installation...
Just trying to add some light-
Peace

Did you ever take the CAI off and go back to stock, or just run the air cleaner without the airbox and see how it runs in the rain? It ain't that hard to do. You can find that out quicker than asking quesions here. Besides there are at least two threads on this forum from people who have similar problems.
Im about to get my CAI and I was wondering what about the under carriage wash at the car wash, will that get the CAI wet?? It shoots water up there pretty hard.
No, you didn't make a bad decision with your intake. About the car wash, I think you be ok as long as you don't drive full throttle for awhile, just be easy on the gas pedal and besides, why would you want to take your car to a car wash when you can do a better job yourself? Wait, nevermind, I just realized you could be to busy to do it yourself, my bad.
I have an AEM CAI and also live in Southern Cali. Hello sunny southern Cali!! no bypass for me. I think the reason some people feel performance loss is when the filter hits water it doesn't suck as much air. I'm taking an auto shop class and my teacher said these filters are oil coated and the only way to hurt your engine is to submerge it. If your car did suck up water you would have engine damage. I wash my own car and I spray under the car sometimes and have had no problems.
A liittle seard on CAI in the tech section comes up with way more than you ever wanted to know about CAI.
Tech Section. Put "CAI" in the search box.

Just install the thing and don't go driving into a pond or something. Just remember that if they had that many problems with water being sucked into the engine, nobody would have one and you would have heard about it already.

Im one of those paranoid types that bought the AEM CAI and got it real cheap and just for safety whether or not it works i bought the bypass valve i havent had any trouble whatsoever plau i like the way the engine bay looks with it so i would install it just to be on the safe side better spending $40 on a bypass valve than having to deal with hydrolock
i am running the stock air box and I get that same rumbling when it rains...my evo makes it sound even worse...next time I go into the dealer im havin them check it to see wtf it is.
HEY I HAVE A AEM COLD AIR INTAKE AND I HAVE THE BYPASS VALVE, BELIEVE ME IT WORKS. DOWN
HERE WHERE I LIVE (PUERTO RICO)IT RAINS ALOT. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME I BUY ONE , I USE TO HAVE
A 99 CIVIC COUPE WITH A AEM COLD AIR INTAKE AN DID A GREAT JOB.
AND BELEIVE ME YOU DON'T WANT TO GET WATER INSIDE YOUR ENGINE.

I would say if you are carefull, no need to buy a bypass valve. Just don't push the gas pedal too much if you are above some water.
When it rains and driving on highway, I have no problems even if full throttle

I think the button you're sesarching for is titled "Caps Lock", push it once and you should be all set...
AEM CAI, love it or leave it...
I personally love it and here's a tip: your car only sucks in air when accelerating (I believe), if you come up on a puddle that you are unable to go around, throw it neutral and coast through... you shouldn't have a problem if the car is idling.
Just my $1.15
the best way to go is get the injen cai and use the aem bypass valve....no cutting is required, all you have to do is put the bpv where the two peices connect.....plus aem did a testing on the bpv, they stuck there intake in a bucket of water and no water even go into the intake....the bpv is GARAUNTEED......!!!!!!
