How stiff is your clutch pedal?
How stiff is your clutch pedal?
I recently purchased a 1997 Civic with 82k miles and was surprised at how stiff the clutch pedal was. The stiffness of the clutch is almost comparable to that of the muscle cars I used to drive as a kid! This is a little 4 cylinder...the pressure plate shouldn't be THAT stiff should it!
The previous owner said that both the master and slave clutch cylinders had both been replaced recently. I bleed the clutch today to see if it would help anything and noticed a squeal as the clutch pedal was pressed that appeared to come from within the bell housing. The car has set idle for a while and I am beginning to think that the pressure plate has begun to rust! I mean, the pedal resistance should be proportional to the spring resistance in the pressure plate, correct? So the questions I have are:
1) Is your clutch petal easy to push or hard?
2) Has anyone ever had a similar problem?
Thanks for your time.

Re: How stiff is your clutch pedal?
Honda is reknowned for world class drivetrains.
At 82k miles I don't see why the previous owner would have used an aftermarket clutch. Unless he is running a spoon engine with t-66 turbos and a Motec exhaust........ sorry...
The squeal is from a dry release bearing its normal. If my clutch gets hot it's spongy and light, if its cool its stiff.I have an exedy stage 1.5 clutch and PP. You can remove the bottom flywheel cover to help keep it cool. I have a stainless clutch line too so it helps make it stiffer too. Honestly your better off with a stiff clutch pedal IMO, easier to feel the clutch engage/disengage.
Stiff is relative too my friend. When you say its stiff does that mean you need EFFORT to push it in? or just minimal exertion?
Try driving it around town in traffic, shifting regularly and see if it gets better. If it doesn't change, hell, let it be unless it's a problem.
