changing oil @ 5K

Hi all,

I have a 01 civic with 80K miles. I am driving about 55 (highway)miles a day. Can I get away with changing my oil every 5K, instead of every 3K? Will my engine suffer any problems, going another 2K without changing the oil?
Thanks.

Re: changing oil @ 5K

5k miles is the normal change interval for oil without additives. i didnt know people still changed oil every 3k anymore unless you own a pre 1980s vehicle.

Re: changing oil @ 5K

i change my oil every 3-4000kilometers. additives dont matter it depends how hard you drive, I frequent the track alot so I change my oil often. if you got a heavy foot your going to break down the oil faster regardless of what additives it has. 5k miles thats about 8000kms, that's pushing it but it should be alright, its a honda.

Re: changing oil @ 5K

I still do mine every 5000 km (3000miles). But I will admit, its a huge waste. Why not use a synthetic and change it every 7000 miles or so? It seems more expensive to buy synthetic but it evens out because you go longer inbetween changes. Also, there is a great writeup on this site about oil changes and such, read up on it it's very informative.

Re: changing oil @ 5K

i used royal purple. i change it every 4000kms tops. and i plan to have a good clean running engine for a long time lol. magnetic oil/trans plugs actually help to for how cheap they are.

Re: changing oil @ 5K

Doing your oil change every 4000kms really does not benefit your engine at all. They have changed oil and added more detergents in it so it continues to clean your engine long after 4000kms. If you use a good brand of oil you can do it every 10, 000 kms and still keep your engine as clean as someone who does it at 4000. Even though I'm a culprit of doing it every 5000kms, I also don't use the best oil. Doing your oil change every 4000 kms is a waste, unless it takes you a year to put 4000kms on your car.

Re: changing oil @ 5K

Every 5k miles is fine. Just use sythetic oil. Otherwise conventional oil is only rated for 3000miles. I agree with tbohar aswell. If you drive it hard it will break down faster. If you drive strickly highway then you could probably even get away with 6k or 7k on synthetic. However If you do a little bit of city I would recomend 5k with synthetic.

Re: changing oil @ 5K

no offense to gearbox as he is one of the few OG's left on this site from 7thgen, i use additives (marvel mystery oil) but i still change between 5 and 7k miles i also run only royal purple with a hamp oil filter. i think its 10 with lube control? so 5k should be fine

Re: changing oil @ 5K

The whole 3000 mile thing is a scam put on by the oil companies. Honda recommends oil changes at 7500 miles, unless you have harsh driving habits or live somewhere shitty and dusty/dirty. Change oil & rotate tires @ 5k, timing belt every 90-100k, & tune-ups (plugs, etc) at the factory recommended intervals, and your honda will run like a top for about a million years.

If you run Mobil 1 synthetic and a really good filter (K&N, or something), you can go a good 8-10k between changes with your driving habits. People may argue with this last fact, but it's true. We used to run Mobil1 in an '87 Mustang GT, totally built engine too, and had no problems ever with 10k intervals.

Re: changing oil @ 5K

yeah with LC20 additive in the oil (dino or syn) you can go 10k miles and the oil is still just as good as new. ofcourse you still need to change the filter inbetween. thats why i usually stick with 6 month 6k mile intervals even tho the oil is still good. i just like to keep clean oil in there even tho i know it doesnt matter for anything. since im under the car doing the filter, may as well do the oil too. im just picky lol.

and yeah the new civics 06+ are 10k miles for oil change on conventional with normal driving. i personally wouldnt wait that long, but thats what honda says. K&N makes really good oil filters i have to agree. only filter i use these days.

I work with a guy who owns a Ford Ranger and he claims he hasn't changed his oil (he changes the filters) in 115,000 miles or so... I WOULD NEVER do that... but who knows. I do mine every 3k but I think it's unnecessary. My theory is the oil company wants you to do it more (3k, more money for them) Honda wants less (7.5k, buy a new car from them sooner) a happy medium of 5k is fine, I'm just ****

Have 02 Civic with over 100k and I change my oil every 10k. the oil I put in my car is Amsoil with there filter as well. Some how the temp of the car is cooler, cant explain it. i would recommend either Amsoil or Redline. I change it 2 times a year. Drive bout 70 miles a day. Do the math and you will see how much you will save!!

I never change the oil under 5k. I had an 02 ex and have a 05 ex now and both cars run like tops. I use Castrol it's good stuff. Your wasting money and oil if you change at 3k.

Re: changing oil @ 5K

Hey supermann. This topic has been covered extensively on the forum. A little bit of search will go a long way. The filter I personally recommend is the original equipment manufactured Honda filter that you get at the dealership. Oil for high mileage engines is probably Valovline MaxLife High Mileage or whatever it's called. Your paying a little more for the products but you know your getting quality.

Re: changing oil @ 5K

As far as i know, there's no problem with it.Sometimes i change after 6k depends on my driving routine in a week. For better knowing, you can try to change after 5k then see if anything goes wrong for you to continue or not.

Re: changing oil @ 5K

If you switch to fully synthetic, you might be able to go every 7500 miles with an extended performance oil filter, and if you haven't already done so upgrade to a short ram, or true cold air intake. I have used fully synthetic in all of my cars for about 4 years now. It cost a little more than regular oil but u save more in the long run since your changing it at longer intervals. If you are driving it hard you may want to switch to 5k instead of 7500k. I go 5k in my car and 7500 k in my jeep, only because i drive my car harder, and I go to the track.

The Honda filter is just a rebadged Fram. Neither of which are very good for the money we spend on them. Both have a paper endcap. All quality filter have a metal endcap. Go to NAPA, they have great filters for less change.

Guys, what are you using, 0w-20 or 5w-20? I've been looking for mobil1 5w-20. Is 2 liters enough for oil change?

Re: changing oil @ 5K

Use 5W-20 until around 100, 000 km or so. Then switch to 5W-30. 2 Liters will not be enough for an oil change, you will need about 3.5 or so. I think that's about how much is used anyway, not 100% sure.

Re: changing oil @ 5K

The A01 is very hard to find. I believe that filter is made in Japan. I have taken many a filter apart. The honda filter (A02) that is sold in Canada is definitely a rebadged fram. The internals are all the same except for a could of more pleats (not nearly as many as the AO1). It has a plastic bypass valve just like the Fram.

I use the S2000 filter. Use castrol oil and change oil every 5- 7000 km.

Re: changing oil @ 5K

i dont understand why u use and pay up to $50 dollars per oil change...

there is no need to use mobil1 (unless u seriously have nothing else to spend ur money one) and no need to change it at 3k miles unless u really drive the **** out of ur car for the whole 3k miles.

most people will think they know **** loads on oil and try and give you advise, but in actuality, they have NEVER sent their oil in for an OIL ANALYSIS, to see how good their oil still is.

oils now a days are so advance, that using simple synthetic oil from valvoline or penziol will be more than enough.

its all the "higher" end oil is not much better, especially if u are going to change it at 5000miles.

also, many people dont know that the oil and its viscosity actualllly breaks down THE MOST within the first 800miles....then breakage is not so drastic after that.

0w-20 is made for hybird cars such as the gay prius (sp)

ur civic's engine wasnt designed to use such a light oil, and it will break down faster.

use a minimum of 5w-20. if ur car has higher miles (75k+) then i would use 5w-30. also use 5w30 in ur civic if u live in hotter conditions.

if ur car has over 75k miles, i would highly recomend using valvoline MAXLIFE 5w30. its a great oil, and it has been tested (in a lab oil analysis) and is highly recommended.
