98 civic ex engine questions

I just bought a 98 honda civic ex. The motor had dropped a rod. I am replacing the motor soon and I am wondering what do i need to look for to replace it? I know that the block has the number d16y8 and i have a five speed tranny. I think that it needs a vtec but not the vtec E. Can these be switched with one another easily? Thanks I advance!

Re: 98 civic ex engine questions

The simplest thing to do is get a 96-00 D16Y8. It's stamped right on the block. It's ok to get an egine from an automatic but you will have to swap some parts. So just keep your old engine around for that. If you get an auto, you'll have to install a clutch.

You could also get a D16Y7 from a 96-00 DX or LX and then swap your head, IM, and a few other parts.
