replacing airbag (not SRS reset)

My SRS light is on in my 96 Civic, and the 2 airbags have been replaced (physically) but they were not connected because I fear the airbag module (or sensor, not sure what it's called) may have been damaged and the airbags may go off if they're plugged in. I'm thinking I may need a new airbag sensor. Or should I be able to just plug them in and reset the SRS light?

Also, if this is what I need, this place says it rebuilds the modules for $50. Has anyone used this place?

Re: replacing airbag (not SRS reset)

If you want your SRS system to function you will need to either get a new airbag computer (SRS unit) or get it reprogrammed. This is the only way the airbag light will go away. It sounds to me like your airbags blew and you replaced them but did not replace the airbag computer. If so your airbag computer contains "crash data" which can only be erased by reprogramming it.

AS for the link you provided, i have never had that site reprogram my airbag computer, but my brother got his civic airbag computer reprogrammed by a local guy and that fixed his light. a friend of mine also got his airbag computer reprogrammed by another shop twice and the light was still on, so it all depends on who u want to trust.

Re: replacing airbag (not SRS reset)

Is $50 a good price? There is a money back guarantee if it doesn't work. I've never had airbags in any of my previous cars so this is all latin to me.

Also, what type of local person has the technology to do this? A dealership? Local mechanic?

Thanks.

Well if there is a guarantee, then i would do it. If you want to try locally search craigslist, there might be somebody who reprograms airbag computers, and dont go to the honda dealer as they will tell you to order a new one.

Re: replacing airbag (not SRS reset)

according to honda once the vehicle has been in a accident with air bag deployment the airbags need to be replaced and the srs unit needs to be replaced. I have never heard of being able to re program them after a crash. i have replaced many of them after accidents in cars at i work on. the only kind of reprogramming i know of is like if the air bag light comes on because of like a bad impact sensor and you replaced it and now you need to re set the srs unit because the new part was installed.... hope this helps you out in any way

That is not reprogramming that is just reseting the airbag computer. There are 2 reasons an airbag light will be on: 1 is a faulty part in the SRS system (bad components like damaged srs sensor) This can be reset using the srs reset connector. another is the airbag computer has crash data written to it during the crash of the vehicle. This crash data can be erased by overwriting the Eeprom with a "clean" image of the Eeprom. And yes it can be done because my brother did it on his

SRS LIGHT, AIRBAG light Reset Testing

Here is some helpful info.

The following site is one that I always use. They have FREE instruction videos to reset your srs, airbag, maintenance required, brake and other lights. Instead of paying a dealer hourly you can find info for FREE without using a scanner. Another cool thing they have is new parts from the dealer with up to 40% discount. Check it out.

www.vehix411.com

This website shows you how to reset the srs without purchasing any tools. Very easy and free. This is how I always clear my codes.

You can also test your computer IF IT is bad, BUT usually if your airbags were deployed, the computer would either need to be repaired or replaced (USUALLY COST TO REPLACE IS AROUND $300). Check out vehix411.com where you can find a link for a company that reprograms the modules for only $49..

Reprogramming Airbag Computer Modules

An airbag module can be reprogrammed. I had my airbags deployed and sent out my module to a company that fully reprogrammed the computer. I found the link on www.vehix411.com. The reason the dealer tells you that it cant be reprogrammed is because the computer is expensive and they are trying to make money off of you, therefore; there is a new tool on the market which is so easy to use, you do not need to take of your computer, you hook it up to your obd and it automatically resets all crash codes. We are all programed by the dealer to waste our money on parts that dont need to be exchanged and there is an easier/cheaper way out. Dont be fooled!!!
