97 Civic LX, Need advice on CV Boot repair / replacement
I am just starting to take care of my car myself for the first time. I used to pay others to do the work for me, but times are tough and it is time for me to learn more about fixing it myself.
OK, now I heard some squealing noises coming the front passenger wheel while driving. I assumed it was simply time to change brake pads, but after removing the wheels I noticed the pads and rotors looked in good shape. After looking a little deeper, I noticed that the outer CV boot is torn and grease is begining to leak out. I am not 100% sure this is the source of the noise, but it needs fixed none-the-less.
So, this will be my first time doing a repair of this magnitude. Need as much info as I can get. Should I buy the whole reman shaft or just buy the boot? The boots are about $15 at Napa and the reman shaft is about $50. I have read elsewhere that replacing the whole shaft is a much easier job than just the boot alone. I would rather make the job much easier by spending the $35 if it will help me save a bunch of time or if it will extend the life of the car.
Yes this is my only car and I plan on keeping it for as long as I can, so putting the money into it is well worth it to me. The car is 100% stock. Specifically it is a 1997 Honda Civic LX 4 DR 1.6L (non-VTEC).
I appreciate the help!

just replace the whole thing, since you may already have damage to the joint inside (from lack of grease).

Yea go ahead and replace the whole thing. I replaced mine a couple months back. It only took me about 45 minutes to do both sides. It will save you about 100 dollars per side to do it yourself and it's really not complicated. If you got a good manual or repair book anybody can do it.

I recommend Carquest axles if they are in your area. They have a lifetime warranty. ALso, you may want to pick up some transaxle seals and change those while you have the axles out.

a quick tip i would add would be to get yourself a breaker bar and a nice BIG cheater pipe that fits right over it. It will help a great deal to get that first nut/flange off. those things are on there like non other! plus it will be a great tools to have around to break loose those rusted up bolts if you are going to start doing your own work to your car.
