Loud thumping when shifting and hitting bumps
Can anyone help me?
I have an 02 Civic EX. There is a loud thumping coming from the front passenger side (i think) whenever I hit any bumps when driving, and sometimes when I shift or suddenly accelerate. I am in the middle of purchasing new shocks (Tokico HP, hopefully find a set from this site that someone doesn't want anymore since they are pretty expensive otherwise) and have already purchased new springs (Tein S Tech). This car was stock when I bought it. I have not done anything with it yet. The suspension is kind of rough which is why I want to get new shocks and struts (101,000 miles, original struts). I wanted to lower it as well so good timing I guess.
Does anyone know what this problem is or if what I am buying should fix the problem? I don't have much money so I don't want to go to a dealer if its an easy fix.
If anyone may know what I am talking about and may know the problem please respond. I will be forever greatful. Thanks a lot. -Nick

Re: Loud thumping when shifting and hitting bumps
when changing the shocks, dont forget to get new strut top mounts and bearings. that could be the cause of the noise. also a lowered car will generally be rougher riding than stock, and the tokicos are also stiffer than stock. i love it but alot of people that ride in my car say its very bumpy and stiff. stock was too bouncy and soft for me.
Re: Loud thumping when shifting and hitting bumps
OK Thanks. Are there other shocks that you would recomend over Tokoco HP? A friend of mine drives a 2000 Celica GTS with the same shocks and springs. It is a little bumpy but not as bad as mine currently. I would prefer a smoother ride but I want the shocks to work good with the lowering springs. I definately want my car lowered. It will be 1.5" drop.
Re: Loud thumping when shifting and hitting bumps
Check your engine mounts. The clunking could be a torn motor mount. I don't know how car savvy you are, but there are four of them. Most likely its the front one, it sits near the exhaust manifold, just check and see if its torn or something. If that is the case, there are a couple cheaper fixes than outright replacing it. You can fill it up with window weld or use energy suspension inserts as an easy fix. Or try to find a used one, but new ones are pricey.

Alright thanks. I appreciate that. I'm not to car savvy but a couple friends of mine are so I will get them to help me. Thanks again!
