problem starting - fuel filter?
i've got an 05 civic and i'm having some issues with it starting. for the past week or so my gf said you have to hold the key for a few seconds before it starts. well today it wouldn't start without me pumping the gas and when it did start smoke came out that smelled like gas. every once in a while while driving the car it kinda skips, like it's missing a beat or something. the fuel filter hasn't been replaced since i got the car so i'm thinking it may be the fuel filter. i'm pretty sure it only does this while it's cold too. today when it started we drove awhile then parked and turned the car off and tried starting it again and it fired up no problem. anyway, i hope i covered everything. does this sound like a clogged fuel filter? any input is appreciated.
Re: problem starting - fuel filter?
how long ago has it been since you did a tune up including spark plugs?
CEL on by any chance?
What grade oil are you running? maybe oil gets too cold and thickens up and the motor is having a hard time turning over on the very cold days?

Re: problem starting - fuel filter?
no, not fuel filter. i'd say sparkplugs, air filter. my car used to have starting issues when i bought it. i did a wrap-arround grounding system and have never had any issuses with electric system since. starts instantly. run some ground straps!
