possible newb question, be warned...
okay, i had these quetions been bugging me for a while, seems like no one can give a straight out answer, and i feel like a newb today(too lazy to search) so here it is...
does a catback truely give any sort of gains, or just a little gain and a better sound?
what about cat-back+header?
what is the point of chaning the cam if we have sohc?
i feel newbified already...
flame on!!

Q]does a catback truely give any sort of gains, or just a little gain and a better sound >>
yea it can give a little gain if your cat/exhuast is particulary restictive or clogged. gains are usually seen in the higher rpms and a better sound overall.
<< what about cat-back+header? >>
definately more likely to get gains with cat-back with header. a header (4-2-1) you can negate the torque loss sometimes associated with a catback. headers also can give you about 5-15hp depending on the car. where as a catback will give you 5 tops.
<< what is the point of chaning the cam if we have sohc? >>
why wouldn't you? you can still get a performance cam and get performance gains. maybe there is a limitation of gain potential due to the exhaust lobes being on the same cam with the intake lobes.
<< you need a camber kit to lower the car the right way? >>
having a camber kit is the fool proof way to lower a car without any alignment problems.

I'm still wondering if exhaust work makes a big enough difference in performance to justify shelling out a few hundred bones. From the dyno charts I've seen, exhaust mods on our cars will give you around 5 more ponies. Except maybe the HP racing header/cat combo. If all you want is something the sounds fast, it might be worth it to get a cat-back or custom piping and whatever muffler you want. As far as the cam goes, it doesn't matter if the engine is SOHC or DOHC. For our SOHC, the cam controls the intake and exhaust valves, and changing the lobe shapes on our cam will affect lift and duration, which changes engine ouput and powerband characteristics. I haven't seen any posts here about people that have tried new cams, altough there were a couple posts on a gude package that included a cam regrind (linky)
Dammit Suzi I wanted to answer those questions!!!
Camber Question:
Generally, if you lower to 1.5" you won't need a camer kit, anything else and you will. Most reputable shops will tell you you don't need one down to 1.5"
Edit:
Changing cams is always a double edged sword, modifying performance for one RPM can diminish performance at another. This is why Vtec is so beneficial. You get two Cam Lobes to choose from, one is good for low rpm and one is good for high. A performance Cam, even for SOHC, can help develop more power from your engine. The price can sometimes be in the lowend grunt though. The downside to SOHC is that its harder to play with the valve timing, you can't mess with the intake and exhaust timing separatley.
