1996 Hatchback DX instrument panel

Just got my first Honda - 96 DX HB. Just love this car but I really miss having a tach. I noticed in the owners manual that the EX and LX models had a tach in the panel. If I got one of these panels, would it be a simple plug in..... i.e. is the wiring harness the same on all models. If not what would be involved as far as new wiring?

Thanks
Jack

You can swap in any 96-00 Civic EX or LX cluster into your 96 DX with no wiring modifications. You just take out the DX cluster without a tach and swap in the LX/EX cluster with a tach. I have an EX cluster in my 97 DX hatch.

Yeah but what about the miles guage? You can't tell me that when you swap panels, the mileage guage goes with it. So how does that work?

Prior to swapping in the cluster you adjust the miles to match or swap the speedometer (odometer and all).

wtf? You're joking right? I can swap a cluster and totally roll back my mileage? It can't be so easy! That's terrible.

Re: 1996 Hatchback DX instrument panel

Definitely not a good idea to keep the lower mileage or even the higher mileage when swapping in a cluster. Depending on what state or country you're in your car's mileage will probably be recorded by motor vehicle regulatory agencies like the state DMV, authorized emissions testing center, etc and eventually show up on CarFAX. It is a Federal offense to tamper with an odometer, however there are exceptions (like when your odometer breaks).

My advice is to match your odometer with the car and not the engine (in case you do a rebuild or a swap) and you should avoid any issues.

And of course you wouldn't want to swap in a significantly higher mileage cluster in case you want to sell your car it will lower its value.

No need to get your panties in a bunch - it's been possible to roll odometers forwards or backwards one way or another since the dawn of automobiles.

Just be careful using the Bueller method.

Yes, the Bueller method doesn't work at all. Classic movie though.
