input bearing noise 2001 ex
input bearing noise 2001 ex
I have a 2001 EX 2 door with a manual transmission and every time I am in gear and let go of the gas pedal I hear a grinding noise. I have read many posts and believe that this may be an input shaft bearing because it happens when the clutch is engaged. (Foot off of the pedal) The odd thing is it is at its loudest in 1st and gets quieter as I shift up. The sound also goes away when I even tap the gas except for in first. In first gear I have to get up to around 3000 rpm then I can't really hear it. The sound is also not really that loud when in neutral but I do still hear it. I'm hoping someone has had some experience with this and maybe you could help. Thanks a ton.

Re: 2001 Ex Grinding Noise
OK I have done alot of reading and it does seem like it is the input shaft bearing. The only thing is there is the grinding sound similar to what you hear when a big rig is shifting. Just no where near as loud. If it most likely is the input shaft bearing I will just do it myself and get a couple freinds to help. But if the transmission is trashed I would be wasting time. I also don't notice a differance in the way it drives it's just the sound.
Please help anyone someone

Re: input bearing noise 2001 ex
I had a problem a couple years ago with the input shaft bearing making lots of noise. It started around 92,000 miles. Most noticable in 1st, 2nd, and kinda in 3rd. Goto an empty parking lot and put it in reverse. Start going in reverse at idle and turn the steering wheel all the way in one direction. If you can still hear the noise, then it is most likely the bearing. If not, I don't know what to tell ya.

Ive replaced quite a few IPS bearings and usually they go at around 100k miles if the car has been driven hard. Replacing it isnt a real big deal if you know how to drop the transmission. Once you split the case make sure you inspect the synchros as well as replacing the bearing

Hey, I have exactly the same car and exactly the same Issue... I also noticed like you did that the engine performance is not affected, but still, that noise isn't just right... I kinda noticed by this thread that this problem commonly tend to ocurr at around 100K miles and I just passed that mark... 1. What exactly is the issue?
2. Are the fix and/or the part expensive?
3. If so... How bad or what could happen if I leave my car alone for about a moth or so while I gather the money to afford the part/job?
Hope I can get a prompt answer...

P.S: Oh, I have also another issue but is not engine/trans. related, but if u guys have an idea help me out: One headlight is dimmer than the other
... lemme know wuz up...
