leaky trunk (final pics p.2)

okay my entire trunk floor carpet pad and carpet is soaked, and there are rust spots starting to show through. anyone know where the water would come from? im scared to take the carpet off. and the weird part is the top trunk floor piece is totally dry. so it cant be leaking through the trunk lid. hmm and i looked under the car but theres no sign of any hole or water dripping.

Re: leaky trunk

It could be the trim around the Trunk. I get leaks some times but thats between where the trunk lid closes and opens.

Re: leaky trunk

the problem is, the water is on the bottom not on the top or sides so i dont see how it would get in.

i just tore out the carpet pad and carpets, its a mess. theres at least 2 inch of water inside all over. i dried it all and i need to figure out where its coming from before i buy new carpet. and it needs to be prepped and painted cause theres rust all over. and i need to figure out a new place for my amp.

made some progress, i moved the amp under the passenger seat and i think the velcro should keep it from moving lol. now i need to find where the water is coming from. and then fix up the floor and maybe paint it before putting carpet.

was it raining or did you go through a high pressure carwash? if it was raining, was the car stationary or were you driving it?

Re: leaky trunk

its been like this for a while. like in the winter, frost would form inside on the carpet, and then melt. the carpet foam kept soaking it up so i did not think it was a big problem until i saw most of my tools and kits in the trunk were ruined from water. and then i pushed on the floor and water came pouring out lol.

Re: leaky trunk

hey my trunk leakes to. I was reading something about 7TH gens, the rear wheel wells where the metal all comes togeather at the rear / trunk side it was listed as one a bad culk job ( ill take a pic later and throw it up in here ). And another spot, If your standing behind the car looking in the trunk, behind the left side carpet panel is a ??? COMPRESSION FLAP ??? that leads into the wheel well. You might wanna check that, my flap got stuck and was letting puddles of rain in.

Re: leaky trunk

thanks, mine looks closed. since throwing out all the carpet and stuff, its stayed dry through the storm last night and the car wash this morning. so idk, maybe there is really no leak and it was just all the frost building inside and then melting and getting trapped lol. i still have alot of work to do on it tho cleaning up most of the deadening, painting, and carpet again. but i dont think i will even bother with a top cover anymore, just leave it off. more space and less weight that soaked padding weighed a ton lol.

well so far it has not gotten wet at all lol. i cleaned up most of the deadening and found a small hole in the bottom, but im not sure if its a drain hole or not. can someone check if they have the hole? its in the middle, closer to the trunk latch side.

i don't think that's 100% guaranteed u'll find ur leak. it may be smth really small and maybe hidden in the structure(welding mistake).

oh yea stripped trunk is so much more spacious. i just gotta find some other way to line it/make it look nice yet keep the space...any ideas?

Re: leaky trunk

looks like i found the leak. there was a huge puddle of dirty water on the right side so i looked around and found a quarter size hole in the wheel well at the lowest point where it meets the trunk. so that got sealed up with metal weld epoxy putty and im gonna paint over that with undercoating in a bit.

any ideas what to do with the trunk floor? its a mess, if the leak stopped for sure, maybe i will put the carpet foam back and some carpet, but i cant get it to look good cause of the creases in the floor.

Re: leaky trunk

the carpet doesnt work, theres too many creases when you glue it due to the sharp curves in the floor. i am trying to remove all the dynamat goo and its taking forever. but im leaning towards priming and painting it. its gonna take a long time tho til i even start that.

Re: leaky trunk

still leaking omg and in the same areas too. wtf. im pretty sure i did a good job sealing it so idk where else its coming from. i need to sit in the trunk on a rainy day. only other "hole"
is that stupid place where the moonroof drain tube goes out, but the rubber grommet seems to be installed correctly. i cant imagine how that much water can get in. unless the whole seal around the wheel well is bad which is really gonna suck.

Re: leaky trunk

i need help, still cant find the exact spot where the water comes in. so far, i can rule out the trunk lid seams. they do not leak. and neither do the taillights. now i finally traced the approximate location to an area inside the rear panel above where the moonroof drain hose goes through. the problem is, i cant see where it connects to the outside of the car cause it is behind the metal car body. i took off the rear deck pillar and could not see anything. i thought that it had to of been the rear window seal, so i put rubber sealer all over underneath the right side window weather strip ad on the top half too, but no luck. today it rained and it leaked as bad as before. i cant believe it, and there is no place i can see where water would get in. im lost. after an hour of rain, there is quite a bit of water on the right side trunk floor and on the bottom. it drips down from the top somewhere and runs along the wheel well before dropping. so it makes it look like its leaking from everywhere but i know its coming from the top and just making a channel to the bottom. problem is i cant see or reach in the small space to find out. where else could water be possibly coming from? also no water comes inside the cabin where the rear deck is. it all happens "inside" the metal framework where its not visible and then ends up down in the trunk.

Re: leaky trunk

it's definitele a pain..just seal the shyte out of it with silicone sealant. and double gasket those tail lights. also put sealant on the roof creases of ur car where u see any sort of spaces underneath the rear windshield's gasket. check any welding spots, where the rust seems to have eaten thru the body..also you can put some mops or smth that absords and hold in water so after a rain u'd go and check out those if they're wet. then you know the way the water flows in ur trunk. and then use food coloring just put it in suspicious places. after u've fixed it, make sure you take out the rust and prime it really well. maybe put some rocker guard rubber spray thingie on the bottom of ur trunk to absorb the rattling noise or whatever u keep in there. thats what i did a couple of days ago. looks sweet...i used a prime+paint mix, matte black colour...came out alright.

Re: leaky trunk (final pics at end)

FIXED! i cant believe what it ended up being. its the outer weather strip that clips into the car body around the very outside edge of the rear door window. i guess water was slowly getting in through the holes where the clips are supposed to snap in and flowing down a channel between the hidden metal frames down to the side of the trunk. i dont know how water even made it past the tiny spaces between the moldings since it was in place securely, but after taking out the strip and putting rubber sealer in all the holes, my trunk is totally dry! its been raining hard for several hours and not a single drop inside.

okay i got most of the tar and crap off, im gonna try and sand down all the rough areas and primer+paint it hoping for the best. im using that speckle paint black with grey dots lol. the problem is there is alot of body work crap like bondo and stuff on one side so its gonna look uneven in some spots. will post some pics later of the process.

got it all primed and painted with rust tough "battleship grey" lol. it looks nice but im not too happy with the body work on the right from the accident. i may just end up getting a new cardboard piece and carpet mat from honda cause it looks kinda bare. but im glad i got it painted at least so it doesnt rust.

that quarter size hole happen to be close to the floor, as if it may be where they had a rubber plug for draining the trunk incase of it flooding? A few focus' have them all over the bottom metal body, good going ford lol

Re: leaky trunk

lol no i saw that moonroof drain plug but it was secure with a rubber piece. mine was an actual hole in the metal frame that got poked out of something. it lead directly to the wheel well so everytime i drove in the rain, dirty water would splash in.

i got the oem cardboard and carpet pieces on order, and also found a really nice cargo net. will post a few pics later once installed.

Re: leaky trunk (final pics p.2)

$8k worth of damage to the rear. the right part of the trunk was smooshed to the window and frame was shot. needed new side panels, trunk lid, bumper, lip, new tails both sides, new sway endlinks, and everything paint matched. i guess for how bad it was, they did a pretty good job.
