What MPG Should I Expect from my Hybrid?
What MPG Should I Expect from my Hybrid?
Just purchased a Civic Hybrid. Have had it only 250 miles. I am very disappointed by the gas mileage which has averaged about 32 MPG in mostly city driving. I do not drive it very hard and am baffled by the low reading. I was expecting MPG in the 40's.
Any thoughts?

The "Actual" mpg of a hybrid is only about 1 or 2 mpg higher than the non.
So in the log run the hybrid car will cost you more money than the non. I do not care what the dealerships say. If you do not believe me, Google it.
So what did you pay for this hybrid?

Re: What MPG Should I Expect from my Hybrid?
hybrids dont get much better mileage than a normal car. actually the HX civics which have lean burn engine can get upto 45mpg and they have no hybrid components. heck my 2002 EX gets 42 on the highway. so i dont really see why people buy hybrids to begin with.
Re: What MPG Should I Expect from my Hybrid?
i also heard the mpgs were not that much better than normal cars. has anyone else read lately about problems with some of the electric motors after they have put a few miles on them (at least with the toyotas)?

You should be able to average 50+ in mixed driving with little effort. When I make a concerted effort to drive for gas mileage, I get mid-upper 60's. This article helped me a lot when I started

If you're driving 100% city, you should still be able to get *at least* low-mid 40's. If not, then you're not using the proper techniques. The car is capable, you just need to learn it. it's a bit different than just driving a regular car.
Re: What MPG Should I Expect from my Hybrid?
People buy hybrids because they have the potential to get mid 60's on the highway. That's a ~50% increase from your ( already good mileage ) EX. It's all in how you drive it.

www.greenhybrid.com is another helpful site for hybrid owners.
The skeptics are dead wrong. I get about 46 mpg in my hch in mostly city driving - plenty of people average 50+. you will get less if you are in cold conditions or taking lots of very short trips. Make sure you have at least 40 psi in your tires (they are rated for 44) as that will really cut your mileage down.
