Valve clatter

Hey--I'm a newbie to this board, as I just bought a bone-stock 2004 Civic LX coupe. The car only has 33,000 miles on it and is in pretty good shape, but I noticed that the valves seem especially loud. I can hear them outside the car, and of course the volume increases when I open the hood. The oil is fresh and at the correct level, and I haven't noticed any other worrisome signs. Is this normal for this car? If not, any thoughts on this issue?

The car still has the powertrain warranty, so I'm not worried about the cost of fixing a problem, but it's a hassle for me to drop the car off for service. I'd like to avoid taking it in if I don't need to.

Re: Valve clatter

Are you sure I need a valve adjustment? Is this a common issue with Civics? I've been driving a Mustang GT for the past 6 years and am kind of new to this. A valve adjustment should be covered under warranty, right?

Re: Valve clatter

Any good how-to write-up on this forum about a do-it-yourself valve adjustment for a 2004 Civic LX? I searched around a little bit, but didn't find too much. I can always buy a Chilton's manual, but I was wondering if anybody figured out some tips and tricks that may not be included in the manual.

Do I need any special tools or supplies, other than a feeler gauge and wrenches? Do I need a new valve cover gasket too?

Thanks!
