Engine swap question. Stock-Vtec
Hey guys. New here, and i appreciate any help you can offer.
Just picked up a 98 black civic DX Auto. 139k miles. I love it, but everything under the hood is rusty, and awful looking to say the least. It runs fine. No strange noises, etc, But
A: 106-115 HP is slightly less than i would appreciate.
B: Ide like the under-hood area to look representable at least
Ill post up pictures if thatll help anybody help me, but here is my question/s.
Should i just throw some upgrade parts into the motor to achieve the 200+ HP of the Vtecs, or should i replace it fully. from the little research ive done, i would think it would be cheaper to just replace the entire engine, but maybe im looking at it wrong.
Random Q's
Also ,would an accord V6 Vtec fit under a civic hood?
SOHC, DOHC, whats it stand for, whats the difference.
What would be some suggestions of full swaps for my civ?
And, being the 'noob' that i am... With more Horsepower, ide expect less gas mileage. With 220ish horespower, what would my mileage be, and if there is no change in gas milage (Or a minimal change), What is the logic behind a slower motor that burns the same mileage?
Thanks,
All help appreciated.

i am sure you are going to get a lot of responses saying SEARCH first because this site is filled with a lot of information that will cover almost all of your questions - except maybe the gas mileage one.
to get around 200+hp out of just a motor you are going to need a swap, more specifically a k swap (most bang for the buck). lots of guys on here and other sites have done, so the information is out there on everything you need and how to do almost everything.
the other option - i don't know if this is included in the just bolt on some stuff - is a turbo, but it really depends on your knowledge of cars and what you want to do with it (daily driver or weekend warrior).
anyway, welcome to the site. you should find the answers to most of your questions if you search.
PS - no offense, but if you do not know the difference between SOHC (single overhead cam) and DOHC (dual overhead cam), then i would start by getting some Simple Green and cleaning your engine. doing little things to the car and getting acquainted with the parts and the information this site has to offer, then after a some time, when you have a good solid knowledge foundation, think about doing a swap or turbo.

i didnt think that the DX came with VTEC, but if it does, you still have a D-series engine. That means unless your daddy is Bill Gates, you ARE NOT going to get 220hp out of it. Unless you did a full turbo build. An Accord V-6 WILL NOT CLEAR, unless your some uber-firewall, chassis modding genius. and you know how to make your own mounts. And like he said, a K-Swap would work excellent, but your looking a a $6000 installed engine. Three-Zeroes. Then, for 220hp, youll need intake, headers, and exhaust. Add another grand. In the end $7000 for a 220hp 6-speed civic. OR: check your local craigslist, and look for a B-Series engine. The B-Series will clear in a 6th gen, and youll find it for about $4000. Then, you can build it (cams, intake, exhaust, headers, etc) and get maybe more than 220hp. Good Luck
