TORQUE SPEC on BOLTS!?!

Okay, so say u want to install a strut tower bar.. and well, the bolts have a specific torque spec, like u gotta torque it 43 lbs per foot or something.

that makes sense.

but HOW DO U DO IT? with a torque wrench of course.

well I'm looking at my torque wrench here. maybe its cheapy one. but it sure doesn't tell me how many lbs per foot i'm torquing..

should I go buy a new wrench ors omethign? I duno. or just tighten it up as much as I can on everything? lol.

or is there more to it. can someone please tell me? I feel pretty silly but I really dont know. I understand u gotta torque some bolts and nuts to specific specs, but geez, I really dont know how they do it.

(I'm thinking of grabbing a front strut, and rear tie bar today and install 'em, so this info will help a lot!)

yeah okay. I just did a search too..

I guess the ones I got are just cheapy wrench... not really torque wrench.

they're rather expensive. heh. saw a 9 bucks one on yahoo though. I'll go look at the tool stores or home depot again now that I know what to look for.

still, is it okay just tighten it all the way or soemthing?

yeah don't over tighten the bolts. the whole point of having torque specs on bolts is to have them tight enough so that they will do the job and won't loosen due to vibration, but not so tight that metal is warped or the bolts get stripped.

pogi2k1ex: Mine looks different. It's like a regular socket wrench, except it has an adjustment by lwisting it and locking it on a certain torque level. Then you tighten or unscrew and you can feel it click when it gets to that torque level. kinda hard to describe, but I highly reccomend this type of wrench. Accurate to within a tenth of a percent and very compact. Goes to 80 foot pounds too. I got mine for $20.

well I think I'll spend 20 bucks. or er.. force my friend to buy it for me.

I'm going to convince her that installing tail lights require a torque wrench. it probably doesn't. but she doesn't know that. ho ho

with tools you get what you pay for--$20 doesn't buy a good wrench. $60-80 for a decent one.

Nah! Mine is just fine. Maybe I got a good deal? The guy behind the counter wasn't too bright. He might have sold it to me for a lower price than it usually goes for. I had a weird feeling when he sold it to me 'cause I asked him about Red Line Water Wetter and he had no clue what I was talking about. I mean, c'mon! You work at an auto store! He looked like he had an IQ of about 80 - 90.
