RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
I have a 04 civic ex coupe and I just bought and installed a 2006 RSX Type S rear sway bar (21mm). However, its hitting my DC SCS exhuast piping and the noise is really annoying
. I'm at stock hieght and i plan to lower it in the future, but this would make the problem worse because the bar would be hitting the piping more.
Is this because its an RSX bar, and not really meant to go on a civic? What should I do? I can get an aftermarket sway (progress or H&R). Would aftermarket sway have better fittment? Or i could get a new cat back exhaust, because DC is too loud for me anyways. I was thinking of getting APEXi WS, or Greddy Evo... Does anyone else have any experiance with aftermarket/RSX sway and aftermarket exhaust? please tell me what fits and how I can fix my problem. Thanks.

Re: RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
that sux...maybe its cuz its the 21 mm? i think most likely its ur exhaust..the piping or something...wat exactly is it hitting on, im not under my car right now but im guessing its the piping behind the muffler right?
Re: RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
yea its the piping behind the muffler...and the endliks are tightened for sure, I got out of my car and saw the the pipe was hitting the bar, so I know that for sure too. Its just...what do i do about it....like if i have a muffler shop fix it, would it sound worse? cuz i really don't like DC SCS sound as it is...way too loud
Re: RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
I would prefer just to get a new sway bar really...the rsx bar doesnt have the exact same shape as the civic one...if anyone knows any aftermarket rear sway that is shaped like the stock one?
Re: RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
the rsx sway is actually a great bar for our cars.. theres nothing a muffler shop can do about the sound of ur exhaust. if they work with the piping and move it aorund a bit, it probably wont change the sound ur exhaust makes but they coul d stop the rattling.

Re: RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
It happens. Its a combo of the fatter exhaust piping and the fatter sway bar. Get some heater hose, wrap and clamp it to the swaybar.
Re: RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
thanks, but i think thats a temporary solution, cuz whenever I get my car lowered, the bar would literally raise the exhuast pipe so the exhuast tip ends up rubbing against the bumper. Then I would have more problems. I think I'm gonna end up selling this sway bar and buying one that would have more clearance...anyone have any suggestions?
Re: RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
sell it to me?
lol ...um well im not sure if the progress sway will rub on that muffler... we would need sum pics to see EXACTLY where its touching..them compare them to an underside pic of a 7th gen with the progress on and see wats up. thats wat i would do be4 id actually go out n get one..

Re: RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
The bars are all bent more or less the same. The easiest solution is to rework the exhaust pipe so it goes higher up and further inboard.... to clear the sway bar. the comptech 22mm bar bangs off my SCS, i just got used to it and more or less ignore it now.
Re: RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
yea i was also thinking a muffler shop could cut a part of the piping out and weld on a section that clears the bar...but donno if all that effort is worth it on an exhuast that i don't even like that much haha...
For now to save money i think i might wrap some heater hose on it so the noise goes away (easier than putting my stock one back in).
Im sure most sway bars are shaped roughly the same, or maybe its just the DC exhaust piping is incompatible with all swaybars other than stock. Its all kinda disappointing tho. I'm not convinced that there doesn't exist a combo exhuast/sway bar that works perfect tho, so Im gonna keep my eye out for one.
I can rest assured that at least stock sway bar clears the exhaust if all else fails haha

i have no rattle with rsr exhaust and rsx sway. just wrap some thermal cloth around the bar. like exhaust wrap or something. or have the shop move the exhaust piping out of the way. sway bar is installed the right way?

Re: RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
getting a new exhaust will not fix the problem. the swaybar hitting the axleback piping is a very common problem with the rsx sway. when this happened to me, i took it to a muffler shop to have them rework the piping. they basically cut the piping and positioned it so it would clear the sway when the car was lowered again (obviously!).
Re: RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
cool, now i know I can either
1)buy an RS*R exhuast
2)buy some different sway bar (donno what?)
3)get an exhaust shop to alter my exhaust (can they do something to make it quieter also?)
i think the first option would be too expensive
cant decide on last two

Re: RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
well you can get a silencer, basically a round metal tube that goes in the tip and has a smaller diameter pipe, so it blocks some of the airflow. there are universal ones on ebay but it doesnt fit all exhaust. gotta see if they have your size.
Re: RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
is the sway bar installed correctly? i was just thinking about this, because if it were upside down, it'd be a lot closer. I have a progress 22mm with an evo2, and it clears perfectly fine. lowered about 1.5" too.

buy this.it is just a sample.you buy this at any car parts store.put it around the rubber hangers of the exhaust.it will lift the ehuast up.you can also adjust on how you want it.it will make the rubber hanger last long too.cut the excess metal piece so that it won't hit any other metal.
i used too have the same prob with my ws2 and eibach sway bar.

Re: RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
I have the 02-04 RSX-S 19mm rear sway and a HKS Hi-Power and they are not even close to each other...clears it by at least a few inches
Re: RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
lol. thats what i did when i had an evo, even bought the rubber thing (the one that holds the exhaust) plus the metal band so it wont make any rattle and you can even hook it up in the middle of the car. you'll see some wholes and it will go across then TADA~~ you made a custom hanger lol.
Re: RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
I had the same issue with my '01 after installing the progress rear sway bar, the rattling is SO annoying. I had a muffer shop weld my first muffler, then, after his **** rusted out, I got a new muffler and did the weld myself with a friend. I actually cut a small section off my old muffler since it is stainless and used that to expand the new muffler by about 1". Its now perfect, no rattle. I got about 60,000 miles from the first job, and the second job was done at about 90,000 miles.
I recommend this path.

Re: RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
I had the same problem and it sounds like ****, the easiest solution which is what i did was go to a muffler shop and have them cut and weld on a 2 inch extension so it pushes the muffler back a bit. The muffler tip would not stick out like a sore thumb. The cost should be around $15-20
Re: RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
I don't know anything about your particular exhaust model, but you can lower and quiet your exhaust sound with a resonator. A muffler shop would just cut out a section of your exhaust piping and weld the resonator in.
Most shops crush bend piping, and it would suck to mess up the nice flow of your mandrel bent to cut in and go around a sway.
(I used to have an '89 CRX SI with a DOHC ZC, and replaced with a JDM B16; I ran a header with custom piping straight back to a magnaflow muffler with 2 resonators and no cat, and it was pretty quiet and low/deep sounding. It still growled when I got on it.)
If you like the way that sway feels, keep it, and either get different hangers (either rubber or bend your metal one on your exhaust if possible), trade your exhaust (seeing as you don't like it), or tape up the sway with something durable to heat.

wwell.. i have the Progress..bigger, and the magnaflow, big. and no nise from hitting.. maybe the can is loose and mooves arounds will hitting bumps.. and hitts the bar
Re: RSX-S rear sway hitting my exhaust!
The reason why you are having problems with the rsx rear bar is because your using the one that came out of an 05-06 model. The 05-06 model sway bars are different than 02-04 which have been proven to work well. You should have stuck with the 02-04 bars instead of buying the 05-06
