Well, this sums up my weekend pretty well...

Still trying to figure out why.... at this point though, all I know is its a paperweight.
... the motor is fine.

Re: Well, this sums up my weekend pretty well...
Went into a corner under full boost, slowed for the corner, hit the gas on the exit... no boost. Shaft bearings went out, the shaft just wabbles around. Still trying to figure it all out. Either something got into the restrictor orifice and blocked the oil passage, or the oil got too hot and was just too thin to do anything. Not sure, need to call around and see if anyone can shed any light on this.... I'm looking for another 28R if anyone knows where I can find one brand new for less than $800.
Davis, call Edwin, my other motor is in his shed.

Wow, that seems like a strange occurrance. Its wierd that it happened so fast and seemingly without cause. Usually problems like that develope over a period of time, unless they follow the lunching of an engine of course. Must have run out of oil somehow though. I feel your pain. Thats not a cheap turbo to replace.

Re: Well, this sums up my weekend pretty well...
There was a lot of carnage this weekend.... at least 6 cars were damaged in on track crashes, a bunch of people went off and it was hot enough to cause some to overheat. In the whole scheme of it, I still have a drivable car.... I actually disconnected the wastegate actuator and charge pipes and ran 4 track sessions N/A, which sucked because the motor is setup for boost and definitely needs it, but I got my moneys worth.
2 other things.... R compounds are awesome, and racing brake pads are even better.

I was gonna say that you should be thankful it was just the turbo...indeed there was lots of wrecks.

Re: Well, this sums up my weekend pretty well...
well it had oil through the line. I ran the car for less than 5 seconds and filled a half liter bottle. Something must have clogged the line or something. I really dont know. Everyone I've talked to is baffled by how it gave out so fast.

Re: Well, this sums up my weekend pretty well...
Well..... after being on the phone all day, the prevailing theory is compressor surge killed it. Its really the only thing that makes sense..... 12 psi builds up much more air than 7, and the hole the BOV was sneezing through possibly wasnt big enough to vent it all out. Beat it hard for 20 minutes... its very possible that the wheel got kicked and threw the assembly off balance... from there, it just tore itself up.
I'll know more tonight, I'm gonna try and take out the CHRA and send it to precision turbo for diagnostics.
New snail on the way.... I'll be back up and running, hopefully by the weekend.

Re: Well, this sums up my weekend pretty well...
Nope.... same one. Trust me 240 HP is way too much to handle on the track anyways. The car was a handful. I'm gonna back it off to about 9 for next time.... thats around 200 whp, which should still be plenty for fun.
Re: Well, this sums up my weekend pretty well...
sucks about the car, but atleast there is some positive in this thread...
its nice to see another civic "racer" that realizes that drag racing is ghey. damn what id do with 240hp in my sedan. sleeper on the road, even bigger sleeper on the track

Got it out.... shaft is broken... I must have surged it.... many times. Its the only thing that can snap a shaft like that, and it explains my instant loss of power.

Carnage pics:

It broke off flush with the back of the wheel. The fracture looks to be torque induced, which basically means the wheels went in opposite directions at some point.
Yes, it blows.... but lesson learned.

Re: Well, this sums up my weekend pretty well...
do you think there is a different type of recirc valve you could go with that would flow more air? Just so you dont have to turn the boost down?

Re: Well, this sums up my weekend pretty well...
A valve with a bigger hole in it is what I need. I bought a greddy RS... which has a 40mm valve as opposed to the 25 I have now. that should be more than enough to flush out the air when the throttle closes.
Re: Well, this sums up my weekend pretty well...
Yeah, thats a little different than what I originally pictured. I was thinking it was just the bearings, hehe. Ouch. At least the wheel didnt explode into a bunch of pieces and get jammed in your IC or something.
Re: Well, this sums up my weekend pretty well...
this is the kinda thing that makes me scared to ever think of going turbo... but ive seen it written before... if you dont have the money to throw ur car off a cliff, then u shouldnt boost.
Re: Well, this sums up my weekend pretty well...
^^ thats not always true :P
but that sucks justin. after all your work, your turbo goes bad. was the 25mm valve the one you had on your older motor?

Re: Well, this sums up my weekend pretty well...
yes it was. But this was a new 25mm valve. It worked fine at 7 psi, but the extra air at 12 was apparently too much for it to clear out.
