With regards to price, it's all supply and demand.
Just go in knowing invoice and what others are paying (ie. from edmunds.com) so you know when you are getting ripped. Anything inbetween invoice and average price is okay. It all depends on where you go and when and whom you deal with at the dealership.
Being educated on the car you want is the best way to get the best price.
Also, don't go in with a nasty attitude, it only works agains't you. Work with the dealer not agains't and you will get a better price in the end.
Also, never work on monthly payments, only on final price of the car. If they ask what you are looking to spend a month, say what is the price of the car, I need start there.
Also, pre-approved financing takes the finanace manager out of the loop as they have the right to swing interest a few points either way. This is fact, I heard if from the banks mouth. The banks give the dealers a few point of play so if you have a good credit score and really can get 2.9% interest, they might offer 4.1% and pocket the difference.
One last thing, fact again from a close friend at a toyota dealership. Being the first in the morning gets the best deals because they want to get the day off on the right foot. By the end of the day, most deals have been made and they most likely made their quota so they are not forced to make better deals. If a deal is lost right before closing, no big deal to them.
Also, again, bad weather days can slow car sales so a real rainy day can get a little better pricing as they want to meet that days sales goals and less people means better prices to move cars.
Be smart, think before acting, be educated on your car and you will be fine.
REMEMBER: If the deal stinks, walk. Don't let the moment get the best of your and sign if you are not happy. Also, be fair, you can only knock the dealer over the head so much. Give and takes works when it comes to buying cars.
