Sunken Sub box- Will this work?
Sunken Sub box- Will this work?
I want to hinge a sub box in the floor of my trunk so I can still access my spare, but have a clean install. I want to sink two 10" subs into the floor, and cant them outward away from each other, mainly for clearance purposes.
It's hard to describe, so I modeled kind of what I want in Inventor. I drew a sub, replicated that flimsy little piece of particle board in our trunks, and went nuts. FYI, the main material is 1/2" oak, since the program doesn't have MDF.
These aren't actual renderings, just screenshots, so please excuse the quality.
Oh, and if anyone else uses Inventor, I can send you all the *.iam's and *.ipt's. Word of warning, though, it's about 20 seperate pieces.

There's a DIY with something very similar to what you are wanting... I think it's called custom trunk II. I'll see if I can find a link for you. It's almost exactly what you want.

Here ya go... It's not show setup at all. It's fully functional and carpeted.

Yeah, I'm thinking of something like that... But I'd have two SPL 10's on either side, and the center would be hinged.
How, exactly, did you carpet the grill like that? That looks tight.

Spares aren't overrated... I've already having to use it once. I'd feel a lot more comfortable having a spare driving back and forth between here and College Station.
I'd be able to get at the spare just fine, although after talking to some people I may have a better idea of what I want. I may mount the subs outboard, pointing in with the amp under the floor between them. I have access to a laser cutter, so I may make some cool plexiglass cutout over it. I'll get started on a design. I'll put some pics up in an hour or so.

No really, spares are overrated. I read it on the internet. Look for yourself

The idea will work. But it might/probably won't sound great. Technically what you drew up isn't even a box. If you do go for this idea anyways, think about using a latch to make sure the panel stays down. Vibration from the subs and any kind of bumps in the road could cause rattling.
good point on the rattling, but if you're intent on this type of box, i think you're gonna have to rethink the enclosure design. esp if you're trying to keep the spare. Not saying it can't be done, imo just not easily with the plan you have

it could be done, if you use free air subs that don't require an enclosure.. it wouldnt be as good for thump but it would work. i suggest a setup like shown above with the sub off to the side or on both sides with the middle of the trunk still accessible.

You could try building a shallow box, then fabricating some kinda of arms to lift it out. Think of the arms on the trunk lid. It would take alot of work and alot of fitting, but it would be a definate eye catcher at shows.
I'm looking at a couple of other designs, like two subs off to each side with the amp in the middle under plexiglass, with a laser-engraved design over it, backlit, etc. All kinds of fun goodies. Cause, yeah, that other design wouldn't hit near as hard. I've got a few tricks to work out, I may have some new pics up of my next concept tomorrow around lunchtime. Know what the best part is? I'm getting a grade for all this.
